Hey guys I need help. I have a 1981 Yamaha XJ750 that seem to be over charging and killing batteries. I replaced the Rec/ref and was running fine around town until I went on the freeway and the bike died about 20 mins on the freeway. when I ck the volt when the bike is runnig I get 13.5 to 17.5 and it jump all over the place. Any ideas fellas?

    Check the Alternator Brushes.

Undo and inspect the Quick-connection for Voltage Regulator to Wiring Harness.
    Look for signs of Melting.
If the Connection looks like it was overheated, ... assure that all the Terminal Ends of Wiring Harness wires are where they will make contact.
Not pulled-out or have slid-out of the Connection.

The Regulator should not allow Charging Current to exceed 14.5 (14.8).
The 14.8V means you must ck the Voltage Regulator.
