Carburetors need either cleaning, or syncing......if you've already done that, go to the simple solution--

Raise the idle. Now, how low does it get before it dies? If you play with the throttle, how low of an idle can YOU hold it at?

Then it sounds like you need to take the carbs back off, pull ALL 4 of the plungers for the enriching circuit out, and clean all those passages. You also may have to pull the bowls off of the carbs and check to make sure that the pickup tube is clean all the way through, and also check to make sure that the tiny hole at the bottom of the tube well in the bowl, is clean as well.

Do that, and then let's see ...........

    OK, good. For now.

    How many miles on it?

The valves should have been adjusted at 3000 miles the first time and probably weren't.

The valves were to have been adjusted at every 5000 miles thereafter. They probably weren't.

IF THE VALVE CLEARANCES HAVE NEVER BEEN TOUCHED (highly likely:)

and the bike has more than 8,000 miles on it, you have a bunch of tight valves, and they're getting tighter.

If the bike has more than 13,000 miles on it, you're flirting with disaster.

If the bike has more than 15,000 miles on it you're about to burn a valve.

Check your valve clearances. Adjust as needed (and they will need it, trust me.)

    Then sync the carbs.

Or ride it like it is until your next post is "bike runs fine when I first start it but it won't start hot." (That will mean you waited too long.)

Now, then: Let's talk BRAKES: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=15874.html

Hey! Glad you got the starter in so quick--good work! And I'm glad the idle screw was the issue and solved!

Now, do a lot of homework, study the forums on shim clearance checking.

PLEASE READ the link I posted; it has nothing to do with the front brakes. It has to do with happens to the rear brakes on a bike that's been sitting.

The guy probably replaced the pads; if he didn't replace the lines it's dangerous. If it's been sitting since '05 you NEED to replace the brake fluid before riding it; right now it's a disaster looking for the scene of the crash.

This is how to check the valves: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=14827.html

And Part Deux, additional info: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=29209.html

If you're serious about actually using this bike; you're going to need a service manual; the sooner the better.

So in the meantime you're trusting your life to "he said?"

There are DATE CODES in the brake lines; either embossed right into the rubber or stamped into the metal ferrules at one end or the other.

GO LOOK AT THEM. If they include the digits "80" or "81" then THEY ARE A DANGER. You wanna take a chance that one pops on you at the wrong moment?

I don't know about you; but I didn't manage to survive 44+ years on street bikes based on what somebody "said" in regard to my equipment.

How long does it take to LOOK at your brake lines? Is it worth your life, or a trip to the hospital?

I sure hope so, as should you. If not, you're gonna find out.

Keep something in mind about a 30-year old bike:

You cannot get away with "shortcuts." The BIKE will not let you-- ignore something, it WILL bite you.

    You'll see.

Meanwhile "said they were done" or not-- GO LOOK AT YOUR BRAKE LINES. If they say "05" then rest easy.

Don't take somebody's word for it.

You'll have to find a happy medium, and it takes time to find that. Ideal is at 1100-1200 rpm. BUT on chilly days, it may idle too low so you feather the throttle a bit, on hot days it may idle a little higher, like 1300 or higher if it get's really hot. In either case, you have to learn where the 'idle screw setting is for each extreme and then set it pretty much at the middle, and get used to your bike's idiosyncracies". Hope that makes sense. I was forever playing with the idle to match conditions, but when I just set it in between the extremes, and a hair on the lower side of middle, I just learned to 'feather' the throttle as needed when it was 'too cool' out.

Once I found that setting that I like enough, I left it there, and it stayed that way for about 9 years til I sold the bike. The current owner still has things set the same..

You'll find it as you get a better feel for your own bike. :)
