Disturbing eBay trend; be careful

    One of the things I've done for years is to take the eBay feed from this site, add "NOS" to the search string and go trolling.

    It's served me very well for quite a while, at "pennies on the dollar." I've managed such strikes as a brand new flasher canceling unit for under $10; and a brand new 550 swingarm for $9.99 as well. Not to mention my $20, 150mph speedometer, and my brand spankin' new $24 Mikuni BS28 carb. Life was good!

    But I've been seeing a trend lately; and in today's "excursion" it seemed to be even more noticeable than before: these people obviously aren't doing their homework, and are (trying to, anyway) getting greedy. People I've done business with before have priced themselves out of contention.

    I'm seeing any number of NOS parts being listed for ABOVE list, sometimes as much as double; when the part is still available from Yamaha. (Or Len.) For instance, a $29.95 starting bid on a part that's still available for $14.14. (I offered the guy $8 and pointed out his folly.)

    Before you jump on any apparent "NOS" bargain, check the part number against the fiche. You may be surprised. I know I was.

    Sometimes though when a part becomes dis-continued, or obsolete, paying more than RRP can be an advantage.
    Here's an item i paid 4 times the original price for. The picture is the wrong item that i had to contact the seller about, and he confirmed that it was the wrong item, and sent me the right item that i was after.
    There was still an old shop sticker on the item that stated £1.50p.
    I paid £8 but it was worth it for the obsolete part.
    Like you say, do your homework and things can work out.

    New Old Stock. This normally refers to an unsold, new part that is taking up shelf space that a retailer would rather use to hold parts that sell. Shelf space costs money.
