So i was in picking up my new speedometer cable on saturday and asked the dealer about new stainless steel brake lines for my maxim.Apparently they are not dot approved. Here in Manitoba Canada they wont pass if you have them installed for a government saftey.was told that when and how they test them they spin them by the end of the cable and they end up freying which makes them fail and the kevlar thats in them has a memory and it aor they figure it woulnt be any good anymore. But of course if you had a bike that passed a saftey and changed them later.....well.I dont know what the laws are in the states but the government safties are pretty much the same across Canada and they look for the similar things but as for Manitoba I reckon yer S.O.L if you install them and go for saftey.Just my 2 cents.Sorry we got rid of the penny too so I guess that was my 5 cents.

where do you get a "safety check"? do they do it if you get pulled over or when you go to the DVM or something? iv never heard of that happening here in the states.

Gotta love the logic behind their testing. "oh, these parts are bolted at either end to a motorcycle, a good way to test them would be to hold them at one end and wing them round in circles until we fatigue the end off it"

Damn, that's crazy. Has anyone ever had braided hoses fail that weren't damaged in a way that'd have sliced a rubber hose twice as quick?

I remember seeing actually some DOT approved ones that had a little cone around either end to stop them possibly being folded where the braided part exits the union (looked like a tiny metal version of the collars vets put on your dog when they've give them the "snip")

here in manitoba you have to have a vehical saftied brfore you can insure it and the safty is good for year. You dont ever have to safty it again unless you sell it after the expiriry date on the safty.Right across Canada I thinkits the same but not sure.they have to be done by a certified mech at a "manitoba public insurance accreddited shop"then you have a sheet that states the vehical is "safe" to be driven on the roads. You have 30 days from the date you have it first inspected to do the repairs so you can take it back to the mechanic to have it finished so its passes.Cars and motorcycles have different mechanics you cant just take it anywhere that does safties. They have been known to pull over a car and check it right there too here in manitoba iff it looks way to unsafe to be on the roads.they mainly check for brakes lights tire depth forks on bikes.without it no riding.

ya i was told about the colllar they sell with them to but if they are on the bike it will fail .I do agree with you on the cutting part of it.I dont agree with it at all.I rather braided lines than rubber especially when we only have 2 wheels to stop us not 4.i want all the "precautions" taken out.

The kicker here is if the rubber brake hose isnt cracked that they can see, it will pass safty.EVEN IF THEY ARE ORIGINAL figure that out 8O

Here in Quebec, a vehicle is "safe" as long as you register it on a regular basis, you don't even have to actually ride/drive it. The vehicle could be stored for years, if it is registered and you pay for your plates and insurance, it is officially safe. On the other hand, if you don't register a vehicle for more than one year, you must have it safetied before you could plate it again.

ya we only have to have the safty done when we purchace a used car that hasnt has one in a yaer.then we never have to do it ever again on that car it can sit for 30 years and we can insure it and drive it.So thats a plus The only way to not have to safty id if i "gift" a vehical to somone in my immediat family ie son daughter or wife.If i sell a car before the safty runs out they dont have to safty but if its been more thnan a year they have to safty.Even if the car hasnt had any miles put on it.

What a joke that is! What do they do when somebody is killed in an accident where for example a worn balljoint caused the steering to fail? 8O

We have an annual MoT test for any vehicle over 3 years old here & when they were considering not long ago whether to make it 2 yearly for any vehicle over 4yrs there was a big fuss made & eventually they decided to keep it as it was & even add some things to the test!!!

At least the things are getting looked at once a year with a view to preventing the majority of vehicles having major problems though, sure the test cert. itself isn't worth the paper it's printed on, and there are circumstances like major accidents outside the test centre then a dodgy repair that circumvent the whole point of it, but at least that theoretical balljoint is going to get spotted on 99.8% of vehicles before the 99.8% of drivers that never even check the oil find out the hard way that it was worn...

Not having a test at all (effectively the Canadian system) is just madness when you consider how mechanically minded/inclined to check most of the population now is :?

(please note that the percentages shown are not accurate, just for examples.)

the only good thing I really see happening is that some non mechanically inclined driver buys a used car and he or she is made known as to what kind of "condition" the vehical is in before or when they purchase it.Mind you if your going to buy a car\motorcycle I personally think if you have no mech skills or don't know what to look for you should automatically take it to have it checked out .

Yeah suppose at least that much is done... Wouldn't like to be a motorcyclist in your country though :?

That said, with the standard of driving here I'm not sure I like it that much better than if a few shonky old rotters with dodgy steering were thrown in anyhow

Here you can do whatever you like to your car AFTER its been inspected.Ive seen people take a car that had sh***y tires on it swap them off go for safety pass then put the shitty tires back on.

They are...the entire assembly is DOT approved, not just the components, which is uncommon.
