Weird Electrical problem

Hi, I'm new to the site. Looks great. I have a '82 maxim xj750j. It was running fine till one day I turned the key and none of my dash idiot lights lit. The only thing that came on was my Head and tail lights. The bike will start but no directionals or brake lights, no horn or tach. The voltage is 12.5 through the fuse block. Engine block grounds are clean. What next? Thanks

 

If you still have the stock fuse block change it to blade style block

 

Howdy grngrn. Change your fuse block out with newer environmentally sealed blade fuse holders. Your problems will most likely go away.

 

"Finding" current in the Quarter Century Old Fuse Panel is an all-together different matter than the current passing across those brittle glass fuse lugs through the old style fuses; what!

The terminal lugs securing the fuse ends deteriorate to such extent that they'll break-off and open the circuit without warning, I say.
Their ability to grasp the metal end of the glass fuse becomes lost after time; and a resistance or immediate open circuit results, don't you know?

Rather than replacing the Fuse Panel with a replica or a pricey Original one from manufacturer; a smaller and more reliable Fuse Panel can be obtained, substituted without great difficulty and is far less dear for the look-alike, I must say!

Have you any idea how bloody difficult it is to type with British accent?

Bollocks! I do it all the time..... ya'll ....... sh*t!! I tried.


My original fuse box did exactly that - deteriorate to the point where the posts got so brittle, as soon as I tried to crimp them a bit closer, they just broke off. Unfortunately I did not have time to wait for a blade style box to get shipped, so I went to autozone and picked up a 4-position glass tube style box, that magically fit inside of the original yamaha fuse enclosure (thanks to a little dremelling). I ended up soldering the wires to the posts instead of using crimp connections, but I dare for someone to break one of my solder joints :twisted:

 

Thanks Guys, I put new fuse box in and it worked but now there's another problem. The bike started ok for the first 10 times, now nothing happens when I push start, just the dimming of the headlight. Any thoughts?

 

Your engine is seized.
Your battery is almost dead.
You are using the hi-low switch instead of the start button.
Your starter is fried
Your solenoid is fried


Those are my thoughts, some more valid than others.
