    Tonight It Lives.
Started up the XJ650H tonight. After having it for a bit over a year now, I finally got it to the point it will start and run. And run it does. It sounds like it only has the 6000 miles that are on the odometer. Purrs like a kitten, and revs right up. And I havent touched a screw on the cabs yet, except for the main Idle screw, which I had previously gave a few twists to because the throttle plates were completely closed and I fugured it would want a bit of air.
Previously, within the last two weeks or so, I had taken the bondo out of the tank where it was previously patched, sanded it all down and sealed up the leaks. Vacuumed out the leaves and nuts. I took the petcock apart and cleaned it. Bought and installed the B&S shutoff valve fr $$4.69 at the local Napa. Bought a new battery, filled it and threw a small charge on it. Replace the funky carbs that were on it, with a set I picked up from e-bay last year. Before I put them on, I did a Clunk test on them and all but one went clunk. The #1 wouldn't open fully, and when it fell, it kinda went pppphhhhhhttttttt.
Took the cover off the slide and found the spring was not sitting virtically, but was laying to the side. The slide felt nice in the bore, so I put it back together, and it slide so nice and went clunk.
Put the carb and tank on, cant find the hold down bolt and plate for the tank. If anyone knows where I set it down, could you tell me.
Put some fuel in the tank, no leaks except fot the bottom of the petcock, where I had forgotten to snug the screws.
Flipped the fuel on, moved the enrichment lever and cranked her. Nothing, nada. Hmmmm got out the starting fluid, blew a little bit into the air box, Turned the fuel valve to pri and opened the shutoff valve ( DuH, I had sut it off after I checked for leaks) Cranked it over and VVVVAAAARRROOOOOMMMMMM.

All the lights work, except the license plate light. Turn signals, rear brake light. Couldn't check the front, as the lever is broken off.
The Tach does not work, I'll have to look into this to see if it's the cable or?
Somebody at one time was selling replacement buttons for the starter. Anyone know how it was that was making them? I had to use a screw driver as the button is completly missing, but the spring is still there.

Thank you all who helped guide me in the right direction.

Now it's on to fixing and repairing everything else.
    What a motivation booster.

The tach cable should fit into a hole in front of the motor right between the heads. I assume it meshes with the cam assembly somehow. Mine came loose once, but I just had to stick it back in and screw the cap down snug.

    Thanks Jeff,
The cap on the engine feels real tight, but, I'll take it off and see what's going on, and also take the other side off.

Nothing like the sound of a DOHC Inline Four to send you into a Tuning Frenzy.

Good work, Man ... you're building a Fun-Ship. That sunburn you get when you take that thing out for a mid-Summer day-trip is going to feel great ... believe me.

    You deserve it!

It is either Chacal or Arizonasteve that sells replacement starter buttons. Good luck.
