    Installing GIMP

GIMP is free open source software that allows you to manipulate pictures. Kind of like the commercially available Adobe Photoshop.

For non Windows OS go here to get it: http://www.gimp.org/downloads/

For Windows OS users follow these steps:
    1. Download GIMP from here http://www.gimp.org/windows/ (if you have non Windows OS then select the other downloads on the site)
    2. At http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html download ‘The GIMP for Windows’ and appropriate ‘GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment’.
    3. Uncompress ‘GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment’ and install it
    4. Uncompress ‘The GIMP for Windows’ and install it

    Resizing pictures in GIMP
    1. Open the picture by selecting ‘File>Open’ on the menu. Navigate to find your picture and click ‘Open’ button
    2. Once you have the image opened select ‘Image>Scale Image’
    3. Change Image Size Width to 500 pixels or less
    4. Hit ‘Scale’ button
    5. On the menu select ‘File>Save As’
    6. Type in the file name
    7. Click on the + next to ‘Browse for other folders’. Select destination folder.
    8. Select JPEG image type from the dropdown and hit ‘Save’ button
    9. Click on the + next to ‘Select File Type’. Select ‘JPEG image’ from the list
    10. Press ‘Save’ button
    11. In the save as JPEG window drag the ‘Quality’ sliding bar until file size is < 100KB.
    12. Check ‘Show Preview in image window’
    13. Press ‘OK’ button

Here are some screen shots of the above described steps:

Edit: Woops, messed up the sticky with a how to resize with microsoft paint. Pretty easy though for any bare back systems on microsoft.

Another way is to right click on the photo in windows explorer and hit edit, it should open the file into microsoft paint.
All you have to do is go under Image ---> Stretch/Skew and hit in the percentage that you want to change the image to, more below.
If you have trouble putting the picture into Paint, then just open Paint and then find the picture under File --> Open.

For the pictures I have downloaded to this site, with a 7.1 megapixel camera, not sure the settings just yet, I just hit it to 50% and it is much less than what is required to put up on the site.

I am going to download GIMP however, because it seems a little easier to use. Just thought I would put up an alternative!
