82 650 Maxim starter clutch

Do anybody know of a link or a how to for replacing the starter clutch witch out spliting the cases. Also, do I need to replace the starter clutch are do I just need a rebuild kit.

Just a rebuild kit. I have heard of a method of repair accessing the starter clutch through the alternator housing. I don't know of anyone who has actually done it so don't know how effective or feasible it would be. There is also a method of repair which just cleans the clutch. It involves pouring one can of Seafoam into the crankcase and running the bike for about ten minutes then draining the oil and replacing it along with the oil filter. I do know some have had this work. All it does is clean out the sludge that had accumulated in the clutch which keeps the rollers from engaging.

 

i tried the alternator way once for about 15 minutes, then pulled the engine
if you can do it my hat's off to you, give it a try you'll have to take the alternator off anyhow
the rebuild kit is a good question, i believe you get springs little plungers and rollers in it, but you may find that the disk they fit in is cracked so
then you need the whole clutch that comes with that stuff
on the bright side if you should split the case there are chain guides in there that are good to replace

Just as a side bar to this discussion on the starter clutch, I found in the past that if your battery is not up at full potential (as is the way with most XJ's including my 1985 XJ900), or more particularly their electrics don't repond well to a weaker battery, not only is the engine a little more difficult to start (weaker spark due to power being used up by the starter motor), but it alo used to cause slippage of the starter clutch. As soon as I gave the battery some charge I reckon the starter motor had that little extra instant punch/torque to it which in turn made the starter clutch spin just that fraction quicker...which in turn pushed out those little metal bearings that make it grab.

For my XJ900, a weaker battery meant that I'd spin the starter clutch on cold mornings before it grabbed. But with a fully charged battery it almost never happened. Maybe the weaker battery and it's downline repercussions just gave that little bit less instant torque in the starter. That's my 2 cents worth anyway but I think there may be something to it. The starting procedure just seems effortless with a fully charged battery.
