Hello. I have a project 81 seca 750 that I'm streetfightering with a few extras, like integrated led turn signals and headlamp/tailights. Problem is, wiring isn't my strong suit, and this will be my first actual rewiring job. My question is,do I have to buy a new wiring harness, or is there a diagram I can use? Any help will be appreciated, thanks

Do you plan on keeping the original instrument cluster (Atari)?

If so, SQLGuy does a complete write-up located in the XJ DIY How-to-Instructions in order to keep the self cancelling function working as well as the functional checks done by the original instrument cluster assembly. If you just change to LED, the original flasher will not function and the brake, head, and tail function will fault resulting in a flashing warning light.

If you plan on removing the Atari and adding another set of gauges, then here is a write-up for removing.

Keeping the self cancelling turn signal IMO is a safety issue, and is easily accomplished no matter which way you go.

Yeah, I'm getting rid of the Atari cluster and replacing it with a Baja designs backlit speedo, and a smaller tach that I haven't bought yet lol.

So don't throw that Atari away, they bring good money even in decent condition.

So just to add LED lighting and remove the Atari the two links should get you there. The first link to modify so the self cancelling turn signals still work, and the second link for modifying the wiring to remove the Atari.

I wouldn't consider replacing the harness unless it has other serious issues. You would need to learn some basic soldering / electrical skills to accomplish the task, but that is what so much of this site is about, learning and improving.

I have seen links here where new harnesses are available, although they would likely come stock and need to be modified just like the one you have. Maybe someone else here knows if you can purchase one with the modification already in place. I don't think Len at info@xj4ever.com has anything like a mod kit to remove the Atari, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Thanks. My final question about the wiring is about the computer thing in the middle of the Atari. The one in between the speedo and the tach. That's not necessary to run the bike is it? I don't think it is. If not, how do I connect the cdi box to the ignition and running wires?

The systems monitor (LCD screen in the middle) is not necessary to run the bike. However, you do have to make the wiring mods listed in the second link earlier in order for the head light, tail light, and brake light to function as each of those signals route through the Atari to monitor their status. The TCI box mounted under the left side cover will not be affected by the removal of the Atari. The main harness connects the TCI to the pick-up coils, ignition coils, and safety circuit. Power for the TCI does come from the "kill switch", so that wiring needs to stay intact.

Also, depending on what kind of gauges you add, removing the Atari could also mean you no longer monitor the side stand, oil light, neutral light, high beam, turn signal, and fuel level. The stock XJ's that did not use the Atari had separate discrete indicators for all but the side stand.

And, there is no mention of it in the linked thread, but the horns for the Seca are mounted inside the head light bucket, and I would assume the guys that did the mod came up with another way to replace / mount a new set of horns.

The sidestand switch also needs to be dealt with. Just unplugging the monitor will result in a bike that will start, but can't be ridden (the ignition circuit will cut out as if the sidestand was down).

I think I've got this right, but the 750 Seca utilizes a DPST switch. One half is used solely for monitoring the side stand to provide a status input to the Atari. The other half is used for the safety circuit. Therefore, there would be nothing to deal with.
