See this link for the thread where I mention pulling apart the wiring in the headlight bucket and having trouble putting it back together.

    http://www.xjbikes.com/forums/threads/82-xj750j-clutch-position-switch-headlight-adjustment.82283/

So I had to remove the headlight bucket and undo every connection inside it in the process. I thought I put everything back together correctly but when I first tested it the front left turn signal lit up and wouldn't go out. I switched two identical brown wires and the headlight went out. I thought it was fixed.

So today I went to start it and noticed three things.

One, it sounds awful, like it's only firing with one coil.

Two, the turn signal indicator lights are both on. They do not turn on immediately when you turn the key. Instead you turn the key, wait several seconds, and then they light up. I think they flicker when the bike is running, but I never got it running long enough to really tell.

Finally, the tachometer doesn't work at all.

I would really really appreciate some help to fix this by tonight because I wanted to ride tomorrow.

    Thanks.

    So.. erm....

Turns out you can plug the tachometer connector and one of the indicator light connectors into each other's harness connectors. Doing so causes power to the tach to be sent to the turn signal indicators and can also cause all manor of electrical gremlins.

    Problem solved. Good job team!
