I never really introduced my 85 700 MAXIM project bike I was going with a plain bobber look on a budget. I rode it today for the first time and all I can say is wow, this bike rocks! I love the air filters even they are making the bike run lean but not that bad. So after doing some testing I just knew when there's a way, there's a way. So I came up with this these individual air boxes 8O That's right! I'm just going to start with a small hole in front for the air to go in making it bigger as I go, one at a time until they're right instead of taking the carbs apart. And the rest, so far I had cut the original seat, new foam and reupholster with the back of a honda civic seat for storage like a map, pack of gum, some cigs and maybe my 45. LOL! J.K. New bars, heat painted black headers, lowered, I want my girl to ride with me so I cut down original rear fender and used rivets to hold it down. Then I covered up the holes and rivets and evened it out with bondo. When I done I'm going to rat style pinstipe the tank only with a small white wall in the back :D Can you belive I found it for $300 at a tow yard and almost left it there after an hour of looking at it and so far I only put $150 into oil, paint, gas, new ignition with key, crank covers, right battery cover, new bars and some imagination. What do you guy's think of it so far?

Re: BOB TURNED INTO A RAT AND NOW HAS NEW CUSTOM AIRBOX(S)!

    If that X-Bike has Mikuni's, ...
Try running a small hose from the Main AIR Jet ... to ... "Outside" the Air Pod.
A -- "Main AIR Intake Manifold - Bypass"

Give the Main AIR Jet a shot at some "Atmosphere" not influenced by a massive volume of turbulence, moving rapidly over the AIR Jet Opening.

See if the Main FUEL Supply flows more expeditiously with outside Air able to be drawn-in to surround the Emulsion Tube and help deliver a Richer Supply of Fuel into the Intake Stream.

I know, I started to polish it but decide not to keep it on and finish the bike instead. I'm not done with it but it is for sell along with some other stock parts.

I actually got lucky on craigslist. I did a search under maxim parts and found this guy that had taken apart a whole xj due to bad motor. I ended up getting everything minus the tank, tranny, motor and shaft for $100!

Re: BOB TURNED INTO A RAT AND NOW HAS NEW CUSTOM AIRBOX(S)!

Thanks! I am having a problem loading up pictures but I'll figure it out. I did lie tho, I had to buy a new petcock so I have $550 into it plus I haven't registered it and I still need a new tire. This bike should be less than a grand when I'm done and it's going to be my daily ride. A yamaha xs650 chopper/rat bike will be next.

I like what you did... Except the gorilla bars.. They're too big for the bike.. Or maybe the bike is too small for the bars.. Either way, gorrilla bars like that need a big rake on the forks and a much bigger engine.. Bars about half the height would look a whole lot better.. I do like the whitewall tyres though.. Nice..

Sorry, that picture of the bike your talking about would be my next project. But your right, the bars are to big for that bike! I also would go with some shorter bars.

Re: BOB TURNED INTO A RAT (PICTURES UPDATE)

Well the boxes worked but I had a problem with one not mathing up with the rest because of the clutch cable. I was able to try'em out still and I ended up drilling a hole in the middle of each side but it also didn't look right. So here's my other solution that turned out beter  They're 4 32oz Modelo mexican beer cans LOL! Now I'm just going to get a needle and start punching holes on each one till it run's and idles good. I really want to go rigid frame but I won't have the time :x I'll let you guy's know how they turned out in a couplle of day's.

Re: BOB TURNED INTO A RAT (YOU'LL GET A BUZZ OUT OF THE ONE!

They should!! I cut down the cans so that the bottom of the can touches the top of the filter, placed the can on top and then drilled a hole in the middle. After that I used rivets instead of screws and the best parts is that the cans do fit to a perfect seal inside the filter ring, these thing are air tight seal untill I start making the holes for them to breath!

Screw pods, just throw some foam into those cans, drill some holes and off you go.

Wow, please post some pictures and give some more info! Wrap those beer cans in foam and it might look pretty good for us not going in the rat rod direction... Although I have to admit it fits your bike quite nicely :)

I only drilled a hole on top for a rivet instead of using a screw and I poked holes with a needle because the cans are thin and you don't want to bend them. Anybody can use this set up! You can sand down the cans and paint them or what ever. Also air filters or pods should be used to keep the air clean, the cans are only used to restrict the air flow instead of rejetting the carbs. I'm going to post pictures on how to build these, they really hold up too!

    Re:

I'm happy to say that my bike is done for now and I have some time to write up some info for those who are having problems with pods. A lot of people have different experience with pods, re jetting, ect and unless you do it yourself, you'll end up paying $$$ an hr to have it done! Now this modification is done to restrict air for those who don't have the box cause of $$$, didn't come with bike, cracked or like me..wanted my bike to stand out! I took some pictures of the cans so you can get a idea to start with. The tools you need is a hand held riviter, drill, beer cans, air filters or pods and scissors. Now for the carbs to run right they need to be completely sealed so try to find the can that fit perfect to your pods. Measure the cans the same size as the pods from the top of the pod to the bottom pod so that they fit inside the ring not the outside. Make sure you are using the bottom of the can and cut the top off. Place the pod inside the can and and drill a hole the size of the rivet your using. You don't want to use screws because they become lose in time plus they wont look as good. Now with a needle start punching hole in carefully toward the top side of the can and count the as you go to make the same amount of holes on the other cans. After your done try'em out, if it needs a little more air, make holes more holes but in the middle but half the amount you did first on top and it it should be done from there. I did 19 holes on the top and 8 in the middle and I'm done with them so give it a try. When your done, you can sand them down a little and paint them the color of choice and your off to ride

Thanks guy's, the seat is the original cut down on the sides and the uphostery is off the back of a honda civic seat. For the idle I had to replace my throttle cable and changed it today...it responds way better now.

I know this is an old thread, but has anyone tried to cut and roll a sheet of treated sheet metal to fit on the inside of the filter?

Looking at the UNI Pods it seems like it would be feasible. the trick will be the amount of holes drilled, same as the beer can trick just less well... yeah... :p
