    I can see it . . . but if it don't run . . . . . .

See a lot of mods to it, including pods and chopped mufflers. What I have gleaned here is that a stock bike is easier and more predictable to tune/ troubleshoot.

    Good luck!

You need mufflers. I don't mean that it woud be nice if you had some, I mean that you NEED them. Power delivery is crappy without.

slide the rubber gromet out of the shell where the wires run through it it will give you a little more play

Some advice, I have full output voltage above 2,000 rpm's 14.40 volts. At idle it is running on the battery. Starts at 12.6 then slowly drops to 12.30. I tested the stator and they are in spec, .45 ohms give or take 10%. Also tested the rotor and they are in spec, 4.0 ohms give or take 10%. I have 50,000 miles on it and i am pretty sure the brushes have not been changed. Peace of mind i will change the brushes. Have not checked the regulator yet. Brushes or regulator??need changing or both?

    from this link
The Ultimate Relay, Switch, Sensor, and Diodes Guide

"For all XJ-series models, the maximum available charging output VOLTAGE should be as follows (all values are approximate):

    * approximately 500-2000 rpms: 1.8 volts gradually increasing to 14.2 volts
    * 2000+ rpms: 14.2 volts up to about 14.8 volts, with a maximum of 14.8 volts (all models except XJ700-X and XJ750-X)
    * 3000+ rpms: 14.2 volts up to about 14.8 volts, with a maximum of 14.8 volts (all XJ700-X and XJ750-X)

If your charging voltages are too low, suspect the alternator brushes first, then perform the alternator stator and rotor checks as described in the Alternator Section.
Note that worn, dirty, or damaged alternator brushes can affect these readings, as can "dirty" copper commutator rings on the rotor face (where the brushes contact the rotor):"

    clean rings with a eraser
could be the brushes there is a wear mark on them should be iirc 17mm to 11mm
clean battery terminals and ground connection to frame and motor from battery wire
and any other connectors in the charging system take a good look at the voltage regulator connectors
