Alright, I bought this bike a while ago knowing that it would take a while to piece back together. It was an absolute train wreck, but for 350 bucks I figured I could make it work. Now, I'm starting to think I've bitten too much out of the proverbial elephant.

I've been digging around on this site trying to find out what mods are common, what people say you should totally avoid, and then trying to line up my bike it it's current state to figure out what is absolutely necessary, and what I just want.

Question number 1. Tachometer. The whole head unit looks like it might have actually caught fire at one point. The plastic bits are melted in different areas, and it won't be worth my time to rebuilt. So, if I decide not to replace it with OEM parts, what tachs swap over from other models without to much of a fuss?

Also, anybody know where I can pick up some decently priced handle bars? Found some, but the man wanted over 14o cash.. That seams a bit pricey for a metal tube...

The 1980 - 1983 750 Seca requires instruments from same unless you are willing to do a bit of modification. Post up a pic of your instrument cluster. I may have a spare housing, and maybe a spare working tach (though I doubt it).

Not sure what you mean by splicing wires together? Are you going to keep the original style gauge setup in there or are you going to go aftermarket gauges?
I would suggest you have a wire diagram and a good understanding of how the electrical on these bikes work before you go much further. Sounds like the cluster you have is burned up for whatever reason. Something must be shorted to do that.

That was the original question. Whether I'm in a world of trouble going after market style, or just a couple of wires off.

I don't really like the look of the OEM gauges so I would like to use something aftermarket.

One the guys over in the next forum XJ Modifications are switching to aftermarket setup. You might want to look at those threads to see what he is using and how he

is getting things wired up to work. I like the little digital battery voltage gauge is cool looking plus its water tight.

Some people call that original gauge cluster a "fish finder" or something along those lines , so there are serveral how to threads and different aftermarket gauges as well

as gauges from other bikes that have been installed with success.

+1. Since you're going aftermarket it would be wise to understand the stock configuration. It'll help you properly install and eliminate what you want without creating other problems.

An ATARI delete is not very difficult, but it does take some care.
