New Bike Owner Advice

    So I am the proud new owner of a 81' XJ650. This is my very first bike and I picked it up from a guy on craigslist for 100$. It's very much a project bike and needs a lot of work done to it. I don't have a ton of experience working on bikes so i'm just taking it slow on this one. Any words of advice or anything to look out for with these bikes? Anything would be greatly appreciated.

    Congrats. These are great bikes that are able to be maintained by folks with as basic skills as I have, which means those who are willing to learn.

    Take lots of pictures and document your work. There are a lot of threads about what you must do to a bike when it becomes new to you regardless of conditions or stories from the previous owner.

    welcome to the forums and the $100 club
    examine the motor and test the ignition system. ohm it out
    valve shims followed by compression test
    clean those carbs clean them again.
    get the motor running first.
    then start spending money on the fix up and other repairs
