Wondering about the washer that the red arrow is pointing to. I just disassembled this starter and cleaned it out, it was chock full of black grime.

All washers pictured in the repair manual diagram seem to be accounted for, and it doesn't really seem to intuitively fit anywhere...so I'm confused lol

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

It's the rubber seal for the insulating washer/sleeve (goes on the outside of the case, over the positive terminal). The insulator itself is plastic or bakelite, and fairly long. The aquare end of the posive terminal fits into a square recess on it.

Since you're in there go ahead and get a rebuild kit so you have new brushes. The insulating sleeve is prone to get brittle and crack, so a new one of those is a good thing as well.

Thanks everyone! Definitely wanted to make sure that I had everything back together in the right places.

I do have a kit on the way, my brushes are at minimum length, and I sure did crack that little plastic sleeve! Oops lol :p

It's over 30 years old and made from a plastic that's pretty brittle even when new. Not cracking one on disassembly is a trick.
