Hi. I'm Dave and I bought an xj because it was $500, it ran, and I had a motorcycle itch that needed scratching. I didn't realize that wrenching on these things would be so fun. Which is a good thing, because $500 vehicles usually need lots of wrenching. Would anyone be able to tell me whether a 1980 midnight maxim would be a decent parts bike for an '83? There is one locally for $150. Mostly I'm looking at the gas tank, and electrical.

My 650 is an '83. The Midnight is an 80. It doesn't have papers, and it looks like a definite parts bike. Mostly I just want it for the gas tank and seat which both look decent. Maybe sell off the rest of the parts.

the gold trim parts would look good on your bike.

I bought the thing. It has most of the stuff that I was missing. Still no kickstand sensor bolts, but the fuse box is an aftermarket that looks like the stock one but more solid.

Looks like you got a good deal. You should be able to sell what you don't need and easily get your money back. Plus you'll have a pile of stuff for the project.
