Hello all! I picked up an82 xj750 a few months ago. I am having some issue with spark. I am getting spark on 2 and 3. I get spark on 1and 4 when I first hit the starter and when I let go. I have a new coil, new plugs, new caps. Swapped the magneto and pick-ups. I swapped the tci/cdi. Everything ohmed out correctly. I get power from the cdi when I hit the starter.

    Any help would be awesome!

When do you not have spark?

check the water in the battery, charge the battery, check the battery voltage while it's cranking, get a new battery

So, one new coil? Which one?

    There is no magneto.

Did any of the behavior change as you've been swapping out parts? Or has it always been intermittent spark on 1/4?

    I'm at 11.5 while cranking. It's a new battery.

The clutch side coil, 1/4. Always been intermittent on 1/4. I get spark if I swap the plugs for coils, which is why I replaced the cdi. I had also tested for power on the old cdi and on the orange wire, had no power. I have 6v on current cdi.

And it was the stator, I replaced.

So I believe I tested the pick up coils and I am getting nothing on one of the wires. And .64k on the other.

for pick up coils you test gray wire to black then test orange wire to black , then test black to ground.
you do this on TCI connector. not the connector with the red /white wire

set meter to lowest ohms setting
    Pick-up coils:
    650 ohms +/- 20% = 520 ohms to 780 ohms acceptable range

but yes it does sound like a bad pickup

6 volts is low at tci you will also want to clean connectors and run/kill switch

The stator, in the alternator? Nothing to do with ignition, then.

With the ignition on and the engine not running, you should have battery voltage (definitely more than 6V) at the orange and gray wires at the TCI. This is sinked at the TCI, not sourced there. It's sourced from the Red/White at the coils. If you're seeing only 6V, that's a problem.

First thing to check would be to disconnect the plug at the TCI and see if it's still dropping to 6V. If it isn't, then that TCI is also bad.

The Red/White comes from the ignition switch and the fuse box. It's common most of the way, though, so most of its run wouldn't affect just one coil. I think there are separate wires going up to the coils... so if it's a problem in the wire itself or in a bad connector, that's where you would see it.

Dropping to 6V, though, pretty much means there's a load dragging it down, and there isn't much of anything that can act as a load like that besides the TCI.

I see 6v when I crank the bike. When I am KOEO I get 11v at the TCI

uncharged/bad battery if you only see 6 volts when cranking you need to get over 10 volts when cranking or bike will not start

He's measuring at orange, not at R/W. Orange will be lower, because you're measuring the switched side of the coil primary.

What are you getting at R/W when cranking?
