I recently took out the starter motor to try and clean up under there and in the process of putting it back, it enters but does not fully line up with the screws. I don't want to put to much pressure and damage something.

Sometimes the oring is swollen and will not let the starter go all the way in. Or it is butting against the gear turn the starter motor and try again.
A light tap or try fitting it without the oring just to see if it is indeed the problem. Then reinstall with new oring.

Be sure to lube the o-ring, wiggle the starter left right and tap very gently on the back to pop it in.
If not, try newo-ring, or turn the starter bendix and try again, and again, it will just go when its ready. :)

Starter output gear. There is no Bendix-type clutch in the XJ.

Yr right k-moe, just used to calling the gear on the end of the starter a bendix, whether its actually a bendix or not.
