Mirror removal

I have what appears to be a stuck mirror or maybe I just don't know which way is off.

The bike is an 82 650 Max. The mirror is the right side where the front brake master cylinder is integrated.

Is the right side mirror a righty-tighty or the opposite?
While I am asking, which way does the left side mirror righten/loosen?

I believe the one on the right side is reverse threaded. That is what I found on my Maxim X anyhoo.

 

Yes right is reversed - left is normal

That did it. righty loosey. Now I can clean out the master cylinder and possibly rebuild it.

 

Didn't anybody ever notice that the flats on that jam nut have "cuts" in them (almost makes it look like two thinner nuts?)

That's to indicate that it's reverse thread. Most aftermarket Yamaha mirrors are similarly marked (mine are.)

 

Now you tell me.
I did notice the cuts. I had no idea that the cuts indicate reverse thread.
Fortunately I did not apply heroic force trying to loosen it the wrong way.

Some old sports cars had reverse-threaded lug nuts on one side, I remember them being marked the same way, plus there are one or two in various spots in the Norton. Machine tools have the occasional reverse-threaded nut, they're marked that way too.

Righty LOOsey for the throttle side. (Removing mirror, stuck mirror). Use a 12" pair of vice grips to remove while ON the handlebars, if servicing the right switch, or mirror. You can't fathom the physical machinations you will go thru to remove mirror if switch is off bike. 100% chance you will knock your hands, or break something else on the bike, with the force applied! Great time to clean and grease 2 areas on the mirror 1)ball joint at base of mirror, and 2) adjustment nut at top of bolt ( mine frozen). And I thought my bike came with "non-adjustable" mirrors. When you go to reinstall, call mother to film and upload video of you wasting 5 minutes trying to screw the mirror in the wrong direction(High level entertainment)

 

there's also a left hand thread on the gear linkage adjuster.

I just use the correct size wrench to loosen the locknut, then back the mirror off using the hex that's on the mirror stem.
Sometimes a bit of penetrating oil is necessary, but very little force is required.

 

You are right. And yes follow your directions while the stem is 'on' the handlebar. Mine was frozen after 20 yes; ). Thanks for reply...spring is coming in NEast
