Master brake cylinder

So I managed to get those screws out and when I looked inside I found this ugly mess, is that rubber piece suppose to look like that? And what's the best way to clean all that gunk out of there? I am planning on replacing the lines and doing a good brake clean over the winter but now that I found this I should clean it up a bit for the summer

I had the same issue this past winter. Redid the MC and caliper. Cleaned everything up with my ultrasonic and rebuild kits.

 

Do the calipers too. Replace the lines.

I did read that brake line thread and I am planning on switching to ss lines, the bike was braking fine but the sight glass is all messed up so you can't see the level I was just checking it out of curiosity to see how full it was and found that mess

 

@chacal has replacement sightglasses (and everything else). Start a conversation with him.

 

Sweet I didn't know you could replace just the glass, I'll send a message to him found a pretty sweet little video on bleeding and replacing brake fluid so that pretty much answered my future questions seems pretty easy to do

 

It is pretty straightforward. You have one of the easier systems to work on.

 

Unless you really like a hard feel I would not use stainless brake lines. I put them on my XJ700N when I completely rebuilt the front brakes and I don’t like the hard feel. They work well but I just don’t like the feel. My other bikes have standard lines, work just as well, but have a softer feel. I am not an aggressive rider so standard, softer feeling brakes work for me.

What do you mean by hard brake like it's hard to pull or to touchy? I don't mind how my brakes feel now with the old ones

 

Check these out, took it out of my 83 magna parts bike, looks like brand new on the inside and it fits perfectly on top my cylinder

 

Braided stainless lines won't expand when you apply the brakes. Rubber lines do, which give a softer feel (and reduces the maximum braking potential of the system). IMO if you ride anywhere near modern traffic you should upgrade to braided lines.

They aren't hard to pull, or touchy. They just feel different because the lines aren't expanding as you pull the lever.

Dos the rear drum brake take brake fluid or just calipers

 

it is mechanical a rod runs to the pedal no fluid and it takes shoes if it is a drum

I am guessing from handle bars and seat it is an 82 maxim

 

Yup it is 750

I really didn't wanna ask this but Google didn't tell me, how full do I fill the cylinder? To the lower line or right full,

 

above the line enough so it does not spill out when cover and diaphragm is installed. but low enough so it should leave a little air bubble in the window so if you look at it when riding you see an air bubble and know you have fluid in there.

no problem asking about the rear brake drum better to ask and learn

I wanna get new mirrors what size thread is it? 82 750 maxim

 

M 10 x 1.25. Throttle side mirror has a left-hand thread.
There are adapters available if you need to have a right-hand thread on the throttle side, but they will raise the mirror height, and you'll need onw for the clutch side too.
