1979-80 XS 750

    Well this project I have given up on. One of the cylinder let the rings free #3 tested at 120 psi the other two 100 and 80, so all over the place. I put the carbs on her and gave her one last time to change my mind, not going to start.

    So I thought what the hell pull the top end off and see what we have. What we have is no way for the cam chain to slide past the valve train/head! I did you not, on this bike you have to split the cam chain to pull the head and well that was enough for me to call it quits.

    So pulled all the metric bolts, screws and oil cooler off the bike. I have a nice oil cool, clean gas tank, really nice seat and original side covers. The bike will head to the salvage yard, just too much work for me to fuss with when I have another Seca needing work.

    [Oil cooler on this bike and a 4-1 header, looks to be in good shape.]

    hmmm......both of my xs750’s are triples

    Have you considered finding an XS850 Custom for the motor?
    Seems the sporty styling of this 750 is rarer than the customs.
    I think this would make an interesting project.

    I need to own a triple some day but not likely one of these.
    The modern Triumphs and Yamahas are just too awesome.

    interesting, this pipe looks to be a 3-4-1
    I think the old Triumph Trident had a similar arrangement.

    I know you're parting the bike but that is a resistor for the reserve lighting system. If the low beam burns out, the reserve lighting module will switch the high beam on automatically and that resistor is used to lower the output of the high beam.

    Thanks for the info. Yes those XS reserve lighting issues, had the same thing with the 1100 I did. I got the 1100 work out with the lights and she is running fine. Once I started to take down this bike I noticed that the swing arm might not have been road worthy either. Put the nail in the coffin was that cam chain had to be separated to take the vale line off. I hate to throw in the towel on these old bikes, but sometimes you have to.

    Here is a pic of the valve train with no slot for the cam chain to fit by.

    Those little slots are for the roller tower the holds the chain off this are.
