Having a hard time finding the VIN number on my 1981 xj650 maxim. I bought this bike recently for $180 without ownership and it has been partially modified and I was told the frame was painted but I thought I would still be able to see the stamp, I googled where it should be but I checked neck and no luck I did find what looked like a “7 20” on the frame under the tank. Any tips or is this just a parts bike? Thanks

Jya4w6003ba000151 is full vin 1981 650 midnight Maxim. There should be a VIN on the neck. Maybe it has been painted over well and you can't see it. Not sure if Canada will allow you to register bike with motor Vin.

There is a company in Canada which reproduces the VIN labels but you may not have enough information for them to do it. It

If there is no Vin stamped on the neck it may be a replacement frame which would have had documentation standing it's a replacement frame. If the neck is clean of numbers you could probably buy the metal stamps and put the VIN number back on yourself just takes a hammer and paint back over it. I do not know if this is legal in Canada or if anyone would notice that you did it yourself on a clean frame.

Is the 4W6 a Canadian designation?

USA Midnight Maxim models got the 4W5 model ID code, while Canadian MM models got the 4W6 code........

I found a company in Canada that reproduces them but online my model of bike is not listed, so I will try to remove some of the paint on the neck to see if I can find the VIN. Thank you

Right side of the neck fault large probably the same stamp size as the engine. Here is a photo of mine. Maybe whoever stamped yours had a light hammer and it’s buried under new paint.

Great thank you, I will try today and let you know if it works. I had a hard time even finding a pic of a vin just so I could locate it better so that helps a lot. Thanks

Scraped the paint off the right side of the neck with a heat gun and wire brush and there was nothing under the paint

I wonder if it was bike somebody built up, maybe original frame was bent/rusted/something and they just took a grinder to the VIN on that one since it didn't match. Can you share the info of who is reproducing it for you? I'd like to get a new sticker for mine, it is barely holding together since I removed it.

Sorry for the late response, the company is called bdesigns and their website is bdesigns.ca the owner Brian was really helpful. Turns out it’s going to be a bit of a hassle to register my bike so it might just have to be a parts bike, I’m going to keep my eye open for another xj This time with ownership and VIN and hopefully I’ll be back on this forum soon.

If you decide to part it out, and want to come to the CNYCC#14 next June, I could sure use that frame.... hint hint hint
