Guys, are the rear wheels the same on the XJ650k, and a 1984 Maxim?
    The yahama part#s are different.

Also, can you change the rear brake drum? If so where can I get the brake drum?

What is wrong with your present rear brake drum? The friction surface is cast iron and cast in place, the only way to 'replace'
the original drum would be to have it spray welded and turned to the proper I. D. I have no idea if the 650 wheel is a direct swap
with the 84 Maxim. I would just buy a used 650 wheel at a salvage yard, I bought one $25.00 USD.
    Cheers, 50gary

The drum brake is of a different size. You can swap the wheels, but you'll need the brake plate for the new wheel as well. Just make sure that you're not trying to put a 650 Maxim wheel onto a Maxim-X (watercooled).

The 1984 750 max has a cracked drum lining, the 1983 650 max has a piece chipped off its lining.

if you have a 650 get a 750 rim and plate it gives you a brake upgrade.

Crap! Is there any machinist you guys know that will ship me out a couple linings? I can install them myself I say, just remove old lining, and/or press new lining into cavity with green sleeve retainer.

These wheels are cheap and readily available.
I took 3 fronts and 2 rears and threw them in the metal bin at the land fill because I couldn’t give them away.
As @50gary stated the going rate is 0-$25, why would you contemplate doing a very difficult and most potentially unsuccessful procedure on a cheapo wheel?

As a hobby machinist I'd love to replace a brake liner on a wheel, but it's not worth the effort when wheels are readily availble. Save your old wheels for when replacements are hard to come by though.

What I am thinking is that I will know what I have.... a used wheel might not have much life either then looking for another and another etc etc.

On a motorcycle capable of 120+ MPH I wouldn’t feel too comfortable with a wheel put together like that. It might be proper tolerances used but maybe not, maybe stressing the hub, who knows. At least with Yamaha I know I can trust them to know what they’re doing.

It is quite rare for a drum to be worn beyond its service life. It is extrordinarly rare to have one that is broken, let alone two. Those wheels were abused.

You can have a new drum liner fitted to your exising wheels, but since the drums are cracked/chipped you really need to have the wheels evaluated for stress fractures.
IMO, you're safer getting used wheels.
