    Trying to clean out my speedo unit but the tripometer knob make taking speedo unit out impossible. I tried everything I could think of to take the knob off but no dice.

    82 maxim 750 with rectangular gauge cluster.

    I think I saw some threads on mine too but I can't see anyway to unscrew it. It just turns the tripometer when you do and there's no way to hold onto the little tiny rod while you inscrew it. I broke my speedo needle off trying :( .

    The trip meter knob is threaded backwards.
    Turn it clockwise to take it off.

    on mine it was a PITA to get off. Was VERY tightly threaded (backwards as noted above) and i had to pull the gauges apart to get needle-nose pliers on the inside shaft to stop it from turning so i could take it off. it felt like i was gonna break it but it ended up working. hopefully you're goes easier than mine.

    cant speak for the Maxim, but my seca was threaded backwards.
    I accidently turned it when reseting the meter, I just put 2 and 2 together. Then I took several speedo units apart and they were all the same, back thread just tight enough to stay on.

    not sure if the seca's the same but i'm pretty sure the 650 maxim and the 750 maxim are different. the 650 uses the same threads but the body is larger, requiring a larger hole in the gauges. hope it helps.

    Knobs-R-Us!:

    Speedometer Trip Meter Rewind Knob:

    The knurled knobs allow you to rewind the trip odometer back to the zero position. On most models, these knobs are removed by GENTLY rotating them in the opposite direction from their normal function. On the 1982 XJ750 Maxim models, there is a tiny screw that retains the knob to its internal stem.

    HCP5923 OEM trip odometer black plastic REWIND KNOB, fits all XJ550, all XJ650 (except Turbo), all XJ750 Seca, and 1983 XJ750 Maxim and Midnight Maxim models.
    $ 16.00

    HCP5922 OEM trip odometer black plastic REWIND KNOB, fits all 1982 XJ750 Maxim models.

    HCP9690 OEM trip odometer black plastic rewind knob SCREW, fits all 1982 XJ750 Maxim models.

    Actually, I'm currently back-ordered on Everythings, in all colors, shapes, and sizes.

    I blame my Everything supplier, he is very unreliable! :D
