Need plans for Manometer

    Does anyone have plans with pics for a homemade manometer. If so I would love to see them posted here. Motion pro is having poduction problems in California because of the mercury, and soon may be unavailable.

    I have used 1/8 inch clear Tygon tubing (2-10ft sections) and tranny fluid. I looped two sections down a 6 inch by 4 ft board and attached them with the white plastic telephone wire holders with a nail in them. Then find something to put a restrictor in the end (something with a 1/64th hole) and your set. You can also use water and the knowledge that it produces .433lbs static head pressure. You could use mercury inside the tubing also, but if the restrictor holes are not small enough, you'll end up with mercury inside the cylinders which will quickly become toxic mercury exhaust inside your garage!

    I opted for the Carbtune II from the UK as it uses precision stainless steel rods and glass tubing and calibrated springs. Cost is around $100, but well worth it.

    That works well... another form I have heard of working well is a bottle type... it works on equalizing the preasures between two sealed bottles.

    If you take one short hose and route it between two sealed jars from bottom to bottom. Fill the jars with half full with water. Then take a hose from the top of the first bottle to one carb, and second hose, of the same length, from the top of the second bottle to the second carb. The preasure change in the bottles will move the liquid from side to side. It will never go up either carb hose (in any volume).

    It works well as you can watch the water move from side to side... you don't have to worry about fluid going into either carb and it's pretty accurate... if you get really clever you can build a few and do all four at once.

    Thank you Gentlemen for your help. I just changed my plugs and #3 was very black so I thought I would try tuning it myself. any other help like where to start would be great.

    Yes the bottles have to be sealed - otherwise there wouldn't be a preasure difference between the bottles... I used poster putty or caulk to seal the bottles in the past.

    I built one of these bottle manometers this weekend and I love it! No more worrying about fluids getting sucked into the engine. I used a couple of baby food jars and drilled holes for my 1/4" tube. I sealed the tops with RTV silicone and I used water with red food colouring for fluids.

    I'm very happy with the results - thanks for posting the pic!

    I attached them directly and I used my air compressor (using low pressure) to check the entire unit for leaks.

    The air space above the liquid in the jar should provide enough damping.

    You know you have it too when the "pop up" center of the baby food jar gets sucked down while synching.

    ok, this may be a stupid question, but where do you hook the lines to the carbs?

    The tubes hook up to the carb boots between the carbs themselves and the engine. There is a little brass nipple on top of each boot and it should be covered by a rubber cap. Pull the cap, attach the hose. Good to go.

    No such thing as a stupid question.
