this is mostly a question for tje 750 secas out there but feel free to chime in on any of your xj's.

is it just me or does the xj750 seca just sound like a total beast? especially when you rev it lets say past 5k. i ride with friends of all bike types all the time. even my crotch rocket friends (and im not exaggerating) have bought different exhaust because they like the way mine sounds and feel like theirs just doesnt measure up. besides me spending thousands less than them. its the one little sense of pride i have on my bike. when i turn on the juice that thing sounds angry as a bat at of hell.

so is it just mine? or do you other seca's out there get a kick out of your pipes?

Yep always liked the sound of the 750's in particular, the 900's didn't seem to have the same rasp as the smaller ones.
That angry rasp over the background of gear whine as you get into it, nice!
Only problem is that the coppers can hear you coming.

My 750 seca is still all-stock in that respect, and I gotta say I like it. :D LOUD when you get into it and wind her up to 5k+ ... but not annoying for in-town cruising either!

I ride with a neighbor who has a harley sportster several times a week and every time we stop somewhere he complains that my bike is louder than his lol. He's the ONLY harley rider I've ever met that didn't sink exhorbitant amounts of cash into "Screamin Eagle" pipes at the dealer.

    Maxim. Seven-Five-Oh.
    20,000 on a Stock System.
Sounds like a finely tuned machine.
Very quiet with a mechanical growl.
Just the way I like it!
Combine the tuning, Valve Train and Middle-Gear whine ...
    Awesome!

Rick and Ike, I gotta say, thats my favorite part about riding the motorcycle. Crack that throttle open, hear that middle drive and valvetrain whine up, then the exhaust catches up and starts stuff to shakin :D I dunno about everyone else, but the 750 seca seems INSANELY loud to me when I really wind it up, like when I'm holding it at 6500+ in the twisties.... heh.

Edit: I do realize part of the noise level is from my helmet, my new one is nowhere near as good about sound dampening as my old one.

Oh yea, stock system flying down the road is a beautiful purr and feel, then nice and quiet when pulling up in the neighborhood. Unlike my neighbors HD, he tries to be respectful but a touch of gas and he wakes everyone. Yea he did spend the extra money at the dealership for the screaming eagle pipes. I have been thinking about the MAC 4 into 2 for the idle sound, but the current system is in great shape.

yeah my helmet makes my bike louder too.

but good lord 3rd gear @7-8k rpm's. tell me you dont smile a little bit. =)

and its nice to be able to pull up to my house quietly.

the seca sounds so great i usually use the engine rev as my horn.

i paired the stock headers into a piece of 2.5" exhaust tubing, and then put sportster mufflers on. i think it sounds pretty damn good , especially between 5-6k rpms.

i want to get the mac 4-2 system, but when i chop it i might just make my own headers and stuff them into a 4" wide open turnout. im not sure how that would sound.

I've been taking to wearing a pair of cylindrical foam ear plugs as of late.
The ear plugs cut-out all the wind whistling and real low frequencies.

That leaves me to enjoy the pleasure of the Engine noise and the harmonics of all the moving parts.
I really feel the power better nat having to deal with the wind racket blowing by me.

I get to enjoy the music of the engineering and ... I guess, "Feel" more than actually "Hear" the power plant, down there, churning-out the rev's and getting cranked-up when I pour the coal on.

    I like it!

I rode a buddy's 2000 Suzuki SV650 tonight(which is tons of fun to ride honestly, that thing LOVES to lean :D) before we went on a ride. Once we got out and he got to cranking it on, he was impressed with how well my bike that's as old as him kept up! He even commented on how much different the bike sounded compared to what he normally hears.

Much better since I replaced the all metal baffle with the competition unit (fiberglass-wrapped straight through) in my MAC 4-1 :D . Got it direct from MAC for about $40.

    Nice video!
    That sounds darn good.
What, if anything, did you have to do to the Carbs?

I took the bike to a shop in about 1992 to have a guy clean up the carbs a bit for me. He never removed them from the bike so I'm guessing he maybe set the float levels and not much else. It did help with starting. The bike runs good but I think it may be about time to tear them down. I have a little trouble starting the bike when it's hot. It tends to flood itself.

Well, ... you HAVE to remove the Carbs from the Bike to really Clean them.
I don't know how to set the Float Levels without removing the Carbs.
    That's strange.

If they haven't been cleaned since '92 ... you're due.
    Piston Bores; too.

You'll probably get that hard-to-start problem worked-out after you do a thorough cleaning and set the Mixtures right; too.

If you're running as good as it does in the Video ... you can't be very far away from addressing everything you need to do with a routine cleaning, a spot-check of sync and a nudge of the Mixture Screws to get you tip-top!

    mine is extremely quite....

since the carbs are sitting in my living room
i had the old runs at half choke but not without.

so i pulled the carbs cleaned thoroughly and then bench synched them.

they go back on this sunday.

    but on the sound question

mine sounds fast. with a kicker 4 into 1 and no packing in the pipe.

ive got a 4into2 exhaust on mine, with straight pipes, thought the idle was a little loud, so i made some custom baffles out of 2 reducers, and about 9 inches of pipe. welded the reducers to the pipe and drilled about 2 dozen holes into each, idles sounds like a large pickup, but if i pop it up to about 4 grand, well, lets just say ive heard the neighbors complain about stuff rattling off their shelves.
