    hello
    my name is sjonnie and i'm from the netherlands.
    since 1 week i own a '82 yamaha xj650 maxim
    it's running smooth and 30k miles on the clock.
    i hope i bought a good bike.

    yes i know for sure that it's a good bike. The only thing i did was changing oil+ filter and the sparkplugs. the only thing i don't understand is why the speedo meter is only going till 130 km/h (80m/h) :s i think it's a lot faster

    80m/h? I thought it went up to 88mph, after which you'd lay a patch of burning rubber while being transported back to the future!


    Or, did you not get the model with the flux capacitor and Mr. Fusion? :lol:

    Welcome, these XJ motors can really lay it down. I have also wondered why the speedo stops at 80mph and wondered why mine still work since it has been well pegged several times. Excellent bike you picked up and this site will help keep it running great.

    I think the 85mph speedo was made for the U.S. models because of a stupid law back in the 80's, brought to you by Joan Claybrook of NHTSA. The thinking was that if you put 85mph as the max speed, drivers would be discouraged from trying to go faster.

    LOL gama i tell people this all the time!!!! those exact words. i tell them that once i go up to 88 i go back to the future due to the stock flux capacitor on my seca. hahahah great to see someoen else sees it that way too.

    well i don't know if my bike is coming from te usa or the uk. lucky for me the inner side of the speedo also telling me kilometers ;)
