Alright, my highschool friend, acquired a maxim, whiched he traded a suzuki RM for. I looked at it today, the guy he bought it from put honda pipes on it, lol, they sound swee tho, but i was wondeirng if they would damage the engine at all. Also he said the clutch slips in second gear after 5k rpm's, and im gonna ask a dealer about it, to see how much the fix would be, and if the problem would be reoccuring, i was wondeirng if you guys could answer that for me. He had the started rebuild, but that seems to work fine, but also there was ducttape on a sparkplug wire, it runs fine and i think it will be alrite, there was a tear in the protective housing, and a new coild and stuff was 160, so ya. But he wants $1550 for it, is that a good deal? i would liek some answers pronto, thanks.

Maxim covers a LOT of bikes. Model? Year? Mileage?

Needs clutch and has previously been repaired with duct tape.

I have a near flawless 82 XJ650 Maxim with air horns, saddle bags, halogen headlamp, halogen driving lights, sissy bar, wind shield and brake lite modulator. Under 36K miles on it. Brand new oil and filters, tires are almost new. Valve lash recently adjusted, strong compression.

I'm asking $1,500 and have had exactly 1 looker in 2 months. He offered 1100. I countered at 1350 and he walked.

You didn't say which Maxim, but unless it is a Maxim-X with solid gold grab bar it's probably too high.

Put me down for a no.

+1 for a big NO no matter what Maxim it is, Carl is right. Of course, Carl should know better than to actually try to SELL an XJ...XJ's are for BUYING...and it sounds like the one you're looking at might be worth about $500.

With 2nd slipping I'm going to vote a very big NO to buying it.

if 2nd slips, 3rd 4th and 5th (6th?) should slip as well. i vote no, based on price. the bike isnt total crap, but why overpay? check prices on craigslist, ebay, cycle trader, see what comparable bikes are selling for.

I'd counter with an offer of $450. You will need to sink more than that to fix it up correctly (doing the work yourself that is). Bill has a very good question, which year/model and what milage? The Honda pipes are not a problem. Prices on parts will depend upon the model.

Where are you ? I have an 83 750 Maxim in much, much better condition for sale in Ontario...

But $1550 for a bike that needs a clutch and is otherwise untested sounds expensive. I'd pass...

Gee, "no" is standing at 100% !!

I bought my running 750 with problems for $700, and my 900 with few minor problems for $900 (no duct tape) so I say, shop around and get 2 XJ's !

That's too much for that bike to have that many issues. I have not paid over $550 for any maxim I have owned, and I have had somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 of them. Keep looking!

the bike is in pretty much immaculate ocndition tho, with all the chrome still looking nice, it runs great, but those are the only flaws, and he said that only 2nd slips, no other gear does, which my yamaha dealer did say is weird, but also a clutch job would be about 175 total for parts and labor.

yesterday I saw an 81 probably xs 400 on craigs list for $1000, from the pics the chain was dry tank was rain-streaked. Gonna offer $350 as a project if it is still around next week. At the same time saw an XJ700 '86 (I think, maybe 600, 650 the listing has been deleted already) for $495, must have been worth double. If I had the cash and a truck . . . Both bikes had titles BTW. There are several 1100's from the same vintage in the $2000-$2500 range. All about where you live I guess.
