OK dispite the great advise i received from "doesn't make sense" i have now cleaned (properly) the starter jets as per the directions i was given and rechecked the petcock and yet without starter fluid my maxim will not start cold does anyone have any other ideas or should i consider finding a preist that is willing to preform an exorcisim!!! I should also mention that since my last carb tear down it runs, idles, and rides better than it ever has (since i've had it) and for the first time has a full range of throttle without studdering or bogging down.everything works as it should except it won't start cold

OK I'll take a shot in the dark. You say it does not fire on start up without starter fluid but once fired it will run correct?

Have you checked your spark? - coils (caps good, coils measure good with meter) and plugs (right type, and gap). I'm wondering if you have a weak spark?

Could be a problem in the electrical too, if theres not enough juice to spark hot enough while cranking, the bike won't start. Starting fluid burns alot more readily than gas does.

Just for giggles (I know you checked the petcock) have you tried putting it on "PRI" before trying to start it? If yes, then I agree with the above in regard to the possibility of a weak spark until generator kicks in.

I had that problem. Bike apparently couldnt flow enough fuel unless on pri cuz I only had a gallon or two in the tank. Definately worth trying!

also once i have it running i can shut it off and it will always start again as long as it doesn't sit more than an hour or two

sounds like a fuel flow issue to me .... you're sure your petcock is working properly? Have you tried on prime just to be sure the petcock isn't the culprit?

do you have inline filters installed? are they clean? Have you dumped out any old rusty gas from the tank and put in fresh? Is it old gas?

How far do you put the choke on? Mine will start with no choke then I use less than half to warm it up. I doubt it would start on full choke.

Cool glad that helped. That is basically my sequence. I can start with no choke in warm weather and could probably let it warm that way but I tweak the choke up till it smooths out a bit. If I go too far it dies. After 30 seconds or so I can turn it off.

Before I redid the carbs I need half choke just to start.
