What is the best satin black engine paint you've used? I used dupli-colour and it's too soft. Scratches easily.

i'm keeping my eye on this post since i am curious about it too. i have heard that painting an engine might overheat the machine since there is an extra layer of paint that you put on which would affect the cooling. is this true? are there certain parts that we should avoid painting to prevent this?

sorry for adding on to your question sgary, buy i figured any info we get would be helpful for both of us. thanks!

Great. I just passed up the grill paint in favor of a can of Dupli-Color low-gloss black to touch up the scrapes and scratches on my '83's mill. Although, I did use Dupli-color bright red on my valve cover (4 coats) and it put up quite a fight getting sanded back off.

I used that on my exhaust collector I found on ebay.
Got everything from tailpipe to engine in near mint condition for a song.
I sandblasted the collector and painted it with the grill paint.
It is holding up very nicely so far.

The grill paint is the way to go. I put that on an old Rupp mini bike I had as a kid and beat the sh!t out of the thing and it probably started scratching after two years of abuse. Just make sure you get paint that is designed to dissipate heat, otherwise your engine life could be shortened.

just so we're clear, should i sandblast the chrome on exhaust system before painting? or would it be alright to spray coats on it as long as you get the right paint (dissipate heat)?

+1 for the rustoleum. Its good to because if you scratch it or get some oil or gas on it, all you have to do is touch it up. With the exhaust you could probably just sand it to let the paint get some bite.

I didn't do the chrome. The collector is plain steel and will rust asap without protection. I sandblasted to get down to clean metal for the paint to stick to.
I am not sure how well the paint would stick to a chrome finish.
