I tried to remove the cams from my parts bike last night. It's a XJ650LJ Turbo. I removed the chaintensionor completely but was still unable to gethe chain off the gear that drives the cam. Is there some kind of trick or special tool? Obviously this is my first attempt at engine rebuild so any advice would be much appriciated. Thank you.

My 650J MAXIM requires that I remove the sprocket from the cam. There are two bolts, manual says to remove them when at TDC. I found that you can't. I ended up removing one bolt then rotating back to TDC to get the last one (on both cams). Once the sprockets are unbolted you should be able to slide the cams out, then remove the sprockets. Use a piece of wire to keep the chain from falling.

    edit:
Get a book! They have all sorts of tips and tricks. As well as bolt tightening sequences, torque settings, etc.

Thanks. I tried removing the bolt but ended up just turning the cam/motor so I'll have to take another look at that tonight. After that do I just remove the 8 nuts on top of the head to get the head off?

There are a few more fasteners to undo beyond taking-off all the Cylinder Head Stud Nuts.
On the front and back. Look between the two Center Exhaust Head Pipes.

That said, ... If you are Pulling the Cylinder Head off a Turbo; you absolutely should have a Workshop Manual to guide you.

There are some procedures that NEED to be followed in order to insure that the Cylinder Head will go back on and the Engine have its Ignition Timing correctly reset that cannot be deviated from.

These cautions and procedures are presented in BOLD or Italics in the Workshop Manual.

I think the best response for helping you get the Head off and back-on your Turbo is:
You should not be attempting to do the job without a Service Manual to consult and follow.

In other words: "Get a book"!!!
