Everyone says that shaft drives are "mostly" maintenance free. Now that I can change the oil & filter, spark plugs & wires, and air cleaner, is there anything I need to do periodically to the shaft drive?

Note: I'm pretty sure nothing has ever been done to it. The bike runs great and while I don't want to try to fix something that's not broke, I also don't want to have a break down later on that's a result of me not having done any preventative maintenance.

Change the shaft oil every 5000 miles or 12 months per the service manual. Easy to do - use SAE 80 Hypoid gear oil.

As I understand it, you should use a SAE 80 Hypoid gear oil GL-4 type oil. I read somewhere that a GL-5 will do bad things to any yellow metal, not sure just how much yellow metal there is in the drive shaft, but the manual does say to use the GL-4 type too.

Had this discussion before and GL-5 is bad on brass parts. My understanding is that there are no brass parts in the final drive. However, GL-4 does the job fine so go with it. No worries that way.

Been there with the GL5 vs GL4 oil with my old British sports cars. GL4 is available from NAPA, they may have to order it for you. Not easy to find otherwise.
