Okay, *just* now got her running for the first time (thanks to some valuable insight after searching though the forums). She musted have been ticked off that she's been sitting all these years though because when I finally got her to run, she roared to life in a big way. Turned the engine over, fired to life and *immediately* started revving of the RPM's much MUCH higher than I was comfortable with for it to just starting. Within seconds was up to 4K, then 6 and no sign of slowing down so I shut it off. Turned it over again, same thing. Shut off, restarted and it's hitting high RPM's right off the bat. Everything is put back together except the exhaust if off of her at the moment. No headers, mufflers, etc. I was told by a bike mechanic to leave them off just to see if it started or not just in case I needed to tear back down into the engine.

She acts like she's been sitting to long and wants to jump out of the gates early apparently, lol.

Don't run it without the exhaust you can bend a valve. Running it with no exhaust could very well be contributing to the issue; I would reassemble the motor into a more complete configuration and see what you get. I think your mechanic's advice was fulfilled, it runs.

Thanks bigfitz, I'll get the exhaust back on and report back tomorrow. This thing exhausted me today. Close to 90 out and my garage had the sun shining directly in.

At least the good news is that she starts. I might even get to take her for a little spin tomorrow if all goes well.

I'll bet you 25-cents you've got the Throttle Cable Hook-up jammed-up under the rear of the Cylinder Head.

That little snag holds the Throttles almost wide open.
Don't bend it or pry it ... If you break it you a way up the creek!
    Way up!

Just pull the rack back enough to free-up the little bastard and flip it out from under the head.

Don't worry ... you ain't the first guy to ever do this.
Oh, yea ... and, you won't be the last; either!

Hey Rick, before I posted this last night I ran a search on the forums and I saw a two page thread where someone had the same issue and I saw where you had mentioned this and I went out to my bike and checked it. I looked and looked, but couldn't see a snag. I wish I could post a picture, but I don't have access to a camera at the moment (let someone borrow mine). The throttle cable itself has a bit of play in it and it looks to me like the lever that holds the throttle cable is straight up and down.

I was really hoping that was it, but either I'm not looking at the right thing or it might be another issue. Perhaps someone could post a pic and show what the correct position of this should be?

Could also be the idle stop screw is set too high, throttle cable mis-adjusted or way out of sync.

Rick, you owe me a quarter, but I'm too much of a moron to accept it. I had the throttle cable and choke cables reversed. Now I'm back to not starting...

Oh well, will trudge on with the bike after work again today.
