the clutch release shaft/oil seal out of the clutch cover? There seems to be nothing to pry on, I did it by clamping a set of cardboard-lined vice-grips to the top of the shaft and smiting it sharply with a non-marring mallet. Is there a better way?

I doth smote it sharply and yea verily, out it came. I was wondering if there was a trick I missed somewhere. I try to avoid smiting 25-year old aluminum if at all possible...

Alright you characters you just had to post a word I didn't know.
    smite, smit·ing:
    1.
    a. To inflict a heavy blow on, with or as if with the hand, a tool, or a weapon.
    b. To drive or strike (a weapon, for example) forcefully onto or into something else.
    2. To attack, damage, or destroy by or as if by blows.

For y'all that were as confused as me.

when one has a recalcitrant part it occasionally requires that one "get medieval" with it; the only way to properly do that is to SMITE it. For when just pounding the crap out of it won't work.
