I was wondering if there are any other gauge clusters for Yamaha street bikes that are somewhat compatible with an 83 XJ750. Like the 85 cluster or even the computerized cluster from 82 or earlier. Mine need replacing and I wanted to spice things up a bit. I'd really like to put the XJ700 MaximX cluster on there, but I'm not sure if it will fit. Even custom gauge faces would make it look a lot better since everything functions perfectly.

I'm making a list of winter projects and was looking for some help on this one.
    Thanks in advance,
    Malcolm

You have lots of options depending upon your electrical abilities. I'm running the gauge cluster off of an 82 750 Max on my 82 750 Seca. Shorter and more of a sport appearance with the cover on it. Just have to modify the harness with a diode to keep the neutral light from lighting up every time you pull in the clutch. You could run a number of different clusters to suit your tasts, just depends upon how much work you want to do.

    How about aftermarket?

There are some all-inclusive digital units out there from the aftermarket, but I think they look cheesy on XJ's.
How about just some smaller aftermarket gauges with the lights built in?
Would require some minimal wiring on your part, but shouldn't be too hard.

Mikes XS has a few good sets to choose from for pretty cheap too. And they're from an XS so they will fit the XJ... http://www.mikesxs.net/mikesxs-accessories.php?category_id=8.5

... And no, I don't work for mikes XS. :p

im going for the "cheezy" all in one digital for my bike. my bike cant decide if it wants to be old school or new school. i just swapped out my square headlight for a round one that i painted and polished to look old school. but now im going with led signals all around and a bixenon HID setup for the headlight.

personally i dig the digital guages.

Thanks a lot for all the great suggestions. I would like to go analog for the speedometer, digital for the tach.
I REALLY like what bluepotpie did with his gauge faces on his Maxim restore. I'd like to find something like that for my speedometer.
Would there be any problems hooking the aftermarket gauges up to my existing tree or would I probably need to do some modding there?
    Thanks in advance.

    Turtlejoint: Got a link? I -really- like this one: http://www.electrosport.com/street/spee ... s-3950.php
To make use of the gas gauge I'm going to have to swap for a 750 tank.

    MalcolmBliss:
Most aftermarket gauges come with brackets. From what I've seen they mount to your handlebars. If you want them in the same position as the current setup you'll need to fab a bracket. Shouldn't be too hard. If you don't have the tools you could stop by a steel shop and have them cut and bend some plate metal for you. They'll charge you for it though. Drill a few holes, do a little sanding and you're done.

I have a electronic tach and wondered if this model would be compatible
    [IMG]
    The specs are:
Electronic Tachometer (operates from Ignition pulses)
    0-12,000 RPM 1.9 Dia. (48mm.), black face
Tach functions only with single dual output type ignition coils - (80-84 factory Tci,
Boyer micro digital or single dual output coil types
    ).

    Part #03-0675

    Any thoughts guys?

i just picked up a set full set of gauges for an XS 750 and youre saying these should work easy peasy japanesy on my xj750rj?

thats COOL. i was hoping i wouldnt have too much issue with them because i think my fish finder is fubar...

youll have to walk me through hooking them up...

Well I sure hope they will fit, now that you've bought them. hah.
I know the aftermarket ones do so, yeah you won't have much trouble.

Hardest thing is going to be the wires and mounting them. There's probably gonna have to be some cutting and re-connecting involved (unless the XS connecters are the same).

I haven't yet swapped mine to aftermarket, but I'm sure we all can help you out each step of the way.

I've got a set of XS750 gauges at home, I guess I ought to step out in the garage and walk through it with you Lt.
I'll have the diode info tonight after work, just got to get through the day.

dont do it yet! i havent gotten the gauges, nor do i know for certain the fishfinder went tango-uniform...

i LIKE the big lug but ive got NO computer, tach or speedo readouts since the offroading experience...

i havent had time to dig into it...well i had the time but couldnt turn a wrench or screwdriver with a cast...

Ok Bluepotpie, the diode is installed between the (looking at the XJ750J schematic) light blue wire off of the neutral switch (tapping off of it) and is connected to the blue/yellow wire running between the sidestand switch, the clutch switch, and the sidestand relay. The cathode is toward the relay and the anode (the side with the stripe) is toward the neutral switch. It needs to be capable of a few amps but I'm not certain what Yamaha decided for a value so I'm going to dig around for a bit on that. An FR606 diode ought to be fine for the application (800 volts 6 amps). Oh Chacal... a little help here please.

interesting, i DO have that diode installed but i still see the neutral light every time i pull in the clutch. I suppose i'll have to spend a little time with the wiring diagram and my bike if the light is not, in fact, supposed to act this way.

Well the diode tested bad so i'll be replacing it tomorrow. that also explains why the engine dies when the side stand is down when in neutral.
