    Re: carb crap

Did you remove the AIR Jets?
Is there any chance you mixed-up the Fuel Jets?
Have you checked the integrity of the Intake Manifolds and the Carb Neck Hose Clamps for Air Leaks?
    Throttle Shaft Seals; too?

Flipped-over Flat and O-ring in the Pilot Mixture Holes?
Are the NEW Pilot Mixture Screws exactly like the Old ones?

Get it running and spray all the critical joints, clamps and seals with some Carb Cleaner and see what happens.

Let's try to get the bottom of it.

    Re: carb crap

    Hang in there yamaha4life,
I had this same thing happen. pulled the carbs countless times rechecked everything, tested, bench synced re installed and to be honest I don't know what I did but one day it just decided to idle and i still don't have it dialed in.
But it's close. I stepped away from it for about a week, was getting pretty frustrated, I'm no motorcycle mechanic.
Anyway stay with it you'll get it sooner or later as I've noticed reading through other threads like yours it always comes down to some small detail.

    Good Luck

running the screw out suppose to make it lean correct cause thats what all my other bikes have been i don't mean to sound stupid here but i feel like it just doesn't do anything....i am starting to wonder about float height and choke now cause everything is perfect but 2 won't do nothing at all i'm just happy i got 3 doing something i'm just so speachless about 1 and 4.....1 before the clean was about spot on now its just way out there 4 hasn't changed at all....oh and p.s. want to give a shout out to chacal for the parts and the needle

    ++++++++++

With this to go on; let's try treating each of the four Carbs independently.
Bring Number-1 Down gradually until you get it acceptably colored.
    Test 2
Remove the Pilot Mixture Screw and see if Fuel is getting up there.
You need a Syringe and a short length of rubber or vinyl hose.
Stuff the hose in the empty Pilot Mixture Screw hole.
Collapse the Syringe and place the nozzle into the hose.
Release the Syringe and see if some fuel makes the trip.
Give Number-3 a degree or two more Richness.
Set Number-4 at 1.75 Turns and see what the Plugs say.

The type of Syringe you will need.
    Available at the Drug Store.

    Re: carb crap

compare the mixture screw to the original - if the tip is even slightly different, that may be your problem.. I ran into this with an XJ1100 I was working on... the mixture screws we got as replacements were just a tiny bit different and it seemed that nickel-width of a turn went from too lean to too rich.

Stop-by the Main Office and pick-up your "License to Tweak"
It gets quite addicting, you know.

You'll be sittin' there, with all the folks around the table, Birthday Candles supplying the only glow in the room, flashes go off from a few cameras, somebody blows-out the candles ... and suddenly, it hits you. You get the overwhelming compulsion to know how your Spark Plugs are lookin'.

"Honey, honey! Where are you going in such a rush"?
"Just cut me a piece of cake. I'll be just a minute".

You come back. The confetti is all vacuumed-up. The dishes are all washed and put-away. Everybody is lookin' at you with their noses going slightly left and right and left and right; standin' there in night clothes.
You have a stain on your new shirt that ain't comin'-out. A squadron of jets are flying past Old Glory on TV with the National Anthem playing. Your wife present for you sittin' in the middle of the table -- still wrapped!

The worst part about it is:

    You don't feel Guilty!

lol i really didn't think that just a 4 to 1 would and could cause that much problems with the bike but it must...i pulled the plugs layed them side by side and really looked at them....i used to be able to know where each one came from just by the color of the plug...not now my little babies are all the same  there growing up being big plugs running in a pack together  i love it..i really thinking hard about the harley muffler thing but this maxim midnight exhaust is so cool all black...i don't have huge chrome hanging from both sides so you really get to see the whole bike and not just focus on the chrome cans and i'm really worried that the harley stuff would piss my plugs off and make them start not minding me....ATTN...i would like my title changed from 2nd gear to "Tweek Junkie"

Let me see if I understand this correctly,

All you basicly did, besides going the right direction
with air mixture screws, was to replace after market
    exhaust with factory spec exhaust?

Or did I miss part of the thread?

More importantly, you have proven once again that a 4-1 DOES NOT "improve" performance it merely alters it and causes all sortsa headaches. The Yamaha engineers that designed these things really got it right and all of our mere mortal attempts to outsmart them will fail, some more miserably than others. I too was AMAZED at how much my 550 IMPROVED when I took it back to the stock exhaust. Even more remarkable was the difference after doing a valve adjustment, had 1 intake (#1) and two exhaust (#2, #3) that were tight. Do a valve adjustment if you haven't and see how much better it is...
