So, I decided to ugrade my coils and wires. My question is, Is there an ignition ugrade for an 82 Maxim 650? Something better than stock or is stock the the top of the mountain?

That's a good question and i'm interested in this as well... does Accel or MSD make a compatible product for us?

you could get the same benifit by installing a hotter range plugs and removing the resistor from the ends of the plug wire...

Hotter and cooler plugs don't refer to the amount of spark, the temp range refers to the properties of the plug in regards to heat dissipation from the cylinders (at least that is the impression I am under). From what I've read on these bikes, going a range hotter on plugs would be a bad idea. Stronger spark doesn't always mean more heat. Only going by what i've been told though, so I have no clue and could be talking out of my butt here.

On my Durango I went with a range cooler plug and a MSD ignition to avoid the dreaded "death flash" software update for the PCM from the dealer which retards the timing and kills performance and MPG and it worked great.

You're right about the plugs: heat range has to do with keeping the plug at the correct temperature to self-clean and not glaze. It does not have anything to do with spark strength (other than a too cold plug fouling easily).

Chacal has some aftermarket, higher voltage, Dyna coils that are a relatively easy fit on XJ's: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=7 ... plugs.html

On my bike I retrofitted a pair of GM Saturn coils, but I am also driving them with Microsquirt rather than from the TCI module. I am not sure how well or even IF the TCI module would drive them.

I used Accel 7mm silicone non-resistive copper core wire (special order from local auto parts store), NGK resistor caps (local Yamaha dealer), and Belden silicone boots (NAPA).

Not to hijack the thread but, if you are not using the TCI were do you get your timing from?
Maybe I just don't know what microsquirt is.

Coach, both Dyna and Accel market replacement coils for your machine. I own both but have not installed the Dyna coils to date. My Accel coils were nice but required making a mounting bracket.

As far as Platinum plugs, I'd avoid them in these old bikes. I've been told by the Bosch Rep that (and I can't quite remember why) Platinum plugs in an
older ignition system will actually make the vehicle harder on fuel and not run as well.

    The whole story's here: http://residentialcolorado.com/SECA_750i.htm

Well, at least, that's most of the story. My bike was damaged when a guy ran it over in a parking lot a couple of months ago. It's repaired now, with a number of aftermarket parts, and I am in the process of changing a couple of things at the same time (new fuel rail, retune for MAC exhaust, and such). I'll update the web site when that's done (hopefully this weekend).
