I'm getting ready to do a valve clearance check and adjustment on my '83 Seca 550. While the aftermarket service manuals are OK and the factory manual even better when it comes to this, should I go ahead and take pictures and put together a "DIY" of the procedure? I don't mind, just don't want to go to all the trouble if nobody will make use of it.

I'm not a 550 owner but you would win big brownie points posting a how-to pictorial!

I'm putting my engine back together soon and would definitely use your instructions. I find that even though I've done something a hundred times,
I could be doing it wrong a hundred times.

I need to check and possibly adjust my valve clearances this winter so i would definitely appreciate a valuable how-to on the subject.

yes the specs for valve clearence are availabe easily enough, but looking at the valves in the shop diagram, they look like some raygun from outter space, i was expcting it to be like a car valve... like most of us probably were... so your insight here would be greatly appreciated

The procedure is identical on all XJs. Only difference is which shim tool is used. I'm sure it would be a welcome addition to the FAQ library.

Use something laying around the garage (like a piece of insulated 12ga solid wire) through the spark plug hole to hold the valve open and you're tutorial will be universal.
