Spray it with Carb Cleaner from the Inside-out.
Before you spray it ... it's dead.
Spraying it will get the Oil out.

Spraying it might ruin it ... but, it's already dead.
If it don't come unglued and fall apart on you ... let it dry.

Order a new Air Filter anyway!
Use the one you clean until the new one get here!

I've used Castrol Super Clean to soak the element, then rinse the assembly from the inside out to flush the emulsified goo out. Then you need to let it dry a few days. I've recovered two airfilters using this method but it took multiple cycles of soaking and rinsing. For the effort, buying a new one is a time and money saver (just not as ecologically sound). Another safe solvent is K&N's filter cleaner. Won't harm anything.

Do you air filtuer gurus recommend the eom paper filters? Or should I fork out the cash and get one of the $35 ones? I realize the pleated paper ones won't last as long and may have a tad more airflow restriction, but do you think the performance sacrifice is substantial enough to spend twice as much?

Get a K&N one, then you'll never have to buy another one :)

What is your pleasure? Some aftermarket filters can be more restrictive than the stocker so buyer beware. Invest in only a known brand (K&N, Uni come to mind) to avoid this pitfall.
There really isn't much to complain about concerning the stock filter, it just needs to be replaced when it gets dirty (not very environmentally minded).

While we are no the subject the UNI site says you may need to rejet due to higher air flow.

Anyone try one? is rejetting required?

yes Either K& N or Uni "should" require a rejet , Few do it though.
