Hey yall. I just bought my first motorcycle, a 1980 XJ650 maxim. I love it... it sounds like a beast, looks mean (ill get a pic up), runs well (at least around the block), and doesn't seem to have any major problems. I'm super stoked and I can't wait to get my license this weekend and get it registered and all that so I can start cruising.
Quick question: is there any easy way to check that this bike is what the guy who sold it to me said it was? I've noticed that the 1980 maxim is pretty rare... so I'm thinking I should verify that that is what it is before I go around buying parts for it.
Thanks for your help! Look forward to anwering some silly questions.

Search Vin Number or just post your vin here. There is a breakdown of the vins that identifies the exact bike you have. Posted by Chacal who is also our neighborhood parts guy.

The engine size is also stamped on the front of the motor, I believe right below the valve cover. I could be wrong but I do believe I read that here. Other then that like Bill said you can post your VIN here or there is a site (which I don't know off the top of my head) that you can put in your vin and it will tell you exactly what you have.

You have it right it is a 1980 650 Maxim - 4H7 is 650 maxim

    Proper designation would be XJ650G. G is 1980 - H 1981 and J 1982

Serial number 00101 and up are 1980 and 10101 and up are 1981

So you have the 4277th production 650 from 1980

No secret to all this. our resident parts guy Chacal posted the breakdown some time ago. It comes in handy.

most states that I know of will require you to get a vin check at your local pd prior to registration. This way they know it's not stolen.

In indiana they only require that if the people at the BMV can't read the numbers on the sticker or stamped onto the frame of the bike ....
