I bought my first bike last month, and for the life of me I can't find the VIN number. I found a 9 digit number stamped on the engine; and the same 9 digit number is listed on the ownership under VIN.

Where is the 14 digit VIN located on a 1983 XJ900?

Whats a RIN? There is a 15 digit RIN listed on the ownership.
Whats an SIC? There is a 8 digit SIC listed on the ownership

after 15 minutes scouring the entire right side of the bike, (and another 10 on the left) I officially give up.

do I have to remove something?

if it's in plain view.... would someone be willing to take a picture of theirs? feel free to black out the numbers.... just something to show me exactly where to look.

The VIN is stamped into the Steel on the Right Side Steering Neck. The Bike is painted and a matching VIN Label is affixed over the one painted-over on the Frame.

Sometimes, the VIN Label falls-off or gets peeled-off by PO's.
That means you have to scrape-away some of the paint covering the stamped-on VIN if you are not able to read it through the paint job.
