So I did an oil change on my xj for the first time since buying it. I was SO glad that i did. Turned out that there was about 5L in there!! half oil and half gas.

She's running a LOT better now, i'm hoping that the slipping clutch issues go away soon, it's already calmed down a little bit.

i used the Castrol GTX 20w50 and fram filter.

Not to hard to do, took me about 45 minutes, not bad for a first timer.

    Thanks for all your advice.

    Victor

Victa; Did you get the float and/or petcock issue that filled it full of gas resolved? Schooter: Here's the link; Yamahas are on page 5 (it's a multi-page "pdf.") http://www.power-21.com/HoneywellPower2 ... e_1211.pdf I'm pretty sure yours takes the same as mine and all the other "airhead" XJs, CH6003.

Yes i did, the PO when i picked up the bike had left the petcock on prime. I'm fairly certain that was the problem. I'm going to keep an eye on it and see if it fills up again. If it does then i'll have to take a closer look at it.

I'm sure i'll be on here asking questions at that point.

Ahh. OK, that would cause it but ONLY if a float needle isn't working properly 100% of the time. As long as it's off when it's in "ON" and the bike isn't running you're ok until you get into the carbs and take care of the float needles. Floats DO hang up occasionally even when everything is right, which is why we need petcocks to begin with.

You should get two new O-rings in the Box.
    Oil Filter Dome Ring
    Oil Filter Bolt Ring.

Victa with that much gas you may want to do another oil change soon to clean it out a bit more. Gas in the oil could cause some slippage issues.

I'm a bit overly cautious, the second change may be a bit of overkill but I look at it as cheap insurance.

hey victa, i was having the exact same problem with the petcock having to be turned to ON when the bike was off, otherwise the fuel leaked into the oil. and this may sound stupid (and if it is, then i'm stupid) but make sure that your vacuum hose is hooked up. i just hooked mine up half an hour ago at the advice of people on here, and she's running like a champ and i can ride while petcock is on the ON position. my thread should still be on the main Latest Forum Posts under "what is this tube for." hope this helps.

Can you take a picture of the tube for me?? I want to make sure i'm looking at the right one. My Hanes manual is on the way and i would like to take care of it before it gets here.

I am going to be changing the oil again. There was way too much gas in there for it to all be out again.

Do you think i should do just oil? Or oil and filter again?

    Oil and filter...

The tube uvivelli is talking about is the vacuum line for your petcock. Each of your manifolds has a vacuum port. One of them (usually #3 but it doesn't matter) has a tube going to the petcock. The other 3 should be capped.
