Just curious, still looking on other sites, but I was told Yamaha makes a 550 Maxim? I don't find one. Was it a limited thing or is it not to be? I have the 550 seca. Aren't the Maxim engines shaft driven as well?

Yes, there was a 550 Maxim. They are pretty common.

Like the 550 Seca, it was also chain drive.

OK, here you go. I believe that they were mechanically identical to the 550 Seca. There may have been a different ignition advance between models in the bigger XJs but my factory book, which includes the Maxim supplement, shows NO mechanical difference except rear tire size and cable routing.

    Hi,
I think the 1981 xj550 h (maxim)was also made 1982,1983. Most parts are interchangable with the 1981 xj550 rh (seca) and the 1982, 1983 also. They were all chain drive. This is a picture of my girlfriend's 1981 xj550h maxim....Sam

You are correct sir! Same three model years as the Seca 550; '81, '82 and '83. I say MODEL years because they were often produced prior to their model year, my '81 was made in Dec of '80, my '83 was made in late '82.
