I bought a fairing off ebay and would like to mount it on my bike. Has any body done this and if so can you give me some tips here. It's the fuller fairing not the sport fairing. I got the mount with it. It's just the upper fairing - I haven't been able to find the lower section but I would like to mount this the way it is since the weather is getting cooler here in Ohio. Has anybody heard of any instructions for this?
    Thanks

I have an 81 XJ 550 and being in the Rochester area of NY it gets cold here to so I bought a Vetter fairing for mine. I ended up on E-Bay and found the fairing mount NOS and installed the fairing on mine. A few radiator clams and a homemade back plate and the unit fit right one. Course now I have a Kawasaki 1100 fairing on an XJ 550. Does that make it a Yamasaki?

Don't know if it is the larger one or not, kinda looks like it, but it mounted right up with the correct Vetter mount for my year bike. Took the Kawasaki decals off it and polished it right up. Now I have cut the windshield down about five inches and what a nice ride she is!

    worm,

It's the larger fairing and I believe it is off an RK. Can you tell what the difference is?

If I saw a picture I could tell you if it is off of an RK. -about 2' wide, has locking stash pockets inside the console, a auxilliary light under the head light

So far it looks to me like I have to remove the headlight, the instrument cluster, and the blinkers. What about the horn and the aux light?

Those are definitely from an RK it should have a Bracket that mounts inside the fairing with metric allen bolts. you can access the nuts from inside the side pockets (storage pockets) itis also attached under the aux light, and to the frame on the down tube (tube under the back bone) I don't know if down tube is the right terminology. I think there are 4 10mm bolts holding it to the frame.

I didn't see them in your pictures but there are also two cheek fairings that attach to the lower right and left of the fairing.

If you look in my gallery you might be able to see some details, it's the same fairing.

    Worm,
Thanks. I looked at your gallery - nice bike. Ok, I do have the fairing mount. I can figure out how to mount the fairing to the mount but I am shaky as to how to mount the assembly to the bike.

    1) It mounts under the aux light? So the aux light stays put? or do I remove the aux light and install it on (or in) the fairing?

    2) What about the horn? Does it stay as is or does it mount to the fairing?

    3) The blinkers get moved to the little bosses that stick out on the side of the fairing mount?

    4) How does it attach to the frame? I see on my frame that there is a section on the front of that down tube that has some holes in it already. Are those the mounting holes?

    5) I did not get those cool cheek fairings for the bottom. I will keep my eyes open or maybe I will fab some up out of styrofoam or wood as a pattern and then fiberglass them.

In the pictures on your gallery you did not have the cheek fairings. Are you still looking?

    Thanks,
    Joe

    Worm,

I forgot to ask, your windshield looks like it comes up to about the top of your mirrors. Is that sufficient height? I am about 6' tall. Will I need a taller windshield?

    Joe,

    1) there is two screws at the bottom of the fairing(under the aux light) that attaches to the bracket, there is also a third hole for the aux light to mount to the fairing. there are two holes in the center of the fairing between the two pockets(interior) that the bracket attaches to. the whole assembly attaches to the frame in 4 spots, 2-10 x 1.25 bolts on the left down tube(one above the other) and two on the right. you may find the fairing to be a bit shaky without the cheek fairings as they offer some support.

    2) My horns were mounted under the fuel tank behind the neck

    3) the turns do get mounted to the fairing bracket (I think)

    4) If the holes on your downtube are threaded, they probably are mounting holes

I actually sold my bike @ the beginning of the summer after cutting and welding all winter (I bought a Harley) so this is going on memory(shaky at best)!

I'll see if I've got any more detailed pictures at home of the mounts and whatnot.

Sorry, I just noticed the other question

I too am 6' + The windshield was a bit short unless I was tucked down.
It was not original height, the PO cut about 4" off of it, so if you find an oem you may be fine.

I didn't have the mount that goes on the bike. I'd like to see a picture of yours before you bolt it all together. I ended up making brackets out of angle iron, and welding them to the frame. I was able to mount my fairing an inch further away from my knees, and an inch higher.

The saddle bags attach to black plastic trunk supports. Mine were ruined upon removal, and I need a pair, or it's back to angle iron.

    worm,

If you're going by memory that's a pretty darn good memory you have. Thanks for the help. I will keep in mind what you said about the fairing being shaky without the cheek fairings. I like the way it looks with the cheek fairings so once the bad weather sets in I will probably either get more earnest in looking for some or I will make some.
    Thanks again,
    Joe

    TIMEtoRIDE,
Do you want a picture of just the mounting bracket? Even though you saddle bag brackets were ruined if you still have them can you send me some pics of them. Anything would be helpful if I have to fab my own.
    Thanks,
    Joe
