I have a 1982 xj650rj. I have been trying rapidly to get this bike to run right but when you ride it and ride at full throttle the bike is losing power from the mid range and top end from 2nd gear up. if you let off and hit it again the power is there. Its been driving me nuts. If anybody has any info on this please let me know.

Fuel delivery problems? Got the correct fuel level in the carbs? Check for flow rate as well.

I had the same problem. Check the needle valve seat screens. I had all sorts of debris plugging mine. Cleaned the screens and the distribution tube for the carbs and it ran like new. Many thanks to XJBIKES for this one.

You need to get the float level to 3mm +/- 1mm, 5mm is way too much. I would suggest you pull, clean and readjust your carbs. Taking into account the details you provided and Capy's two cents, I think you will find a solution (or at least some answers) in pulling the carbs.
