To me, it looks like the arrow is pointing at the Cylinder Head Gasket.

being that it is an aircooled engine, i would see about re-torquing the head down. I know it isn't the same as my XS750, but re-torquing on my XS made a huge difference.

Before you tear the motor apart, make sure your cam chain tensioner gasket is not leaking... cause it will drip all over that area.

you can get to it without pulling the motor, but you will have to pull the valve body and the head.

Any possibilites the YICS port is leaking? Most likley a head gasket. My XJ1100 has a oil supply line for the head about the same location as your picture, I don't know if the 650's have it.

I've never broken into my actual engine so I'll throw a few torque settings at ya' from my Haynes manual.
The cylinder head can be removed with the engine unit in or out of the frame.

Cylinder head cap nuts - oil lightly 3.2kgf m / 23.1 lbf ft
    " " cover bolt 1.0 " / 7.2 "
    " head/block 8mm nuts 2.0 " / 14.5 "
    " block/crankcase 8mm nut 2.0 " / 14.5

Hope this helps you some until you get your manual.

It was quite easy to take the head off my 82 650 Maxim (YICS). Took a fair amount of time, but if you go slow and read the book (a few times before, and as you are doing it) you shouldn't have any problems. I think I did it with two or three sockets, just as many wrenches and a torque wrench.

    Slow and gentle...

You may find a hard time finding a shop that wants to work on a 25+ year old bike. I would take some steps to be sure you know exactly what the source of the oil is before you rip it apart. Oil leaks often "travel" (aided by wind blast) and can fool you as to their true origin. Take a rag with mineral spirits or tar remover and clean the surrounding areas DRY. Then go for a ride, checking frequently. You should be able to pinpoint it that way.

The Mission is to get the Cylinder Head Gasket replaced without bringing the Bike in to a Dealership or Shop and SAVE as much money as possible.

The Number-1 Resource you MUST have is a WorkShop Manual.
Once you have a Shop Manual, in hand, you will be considered armed and extremely dangerous.

Dangerous to those who charge big-bucks to do what you are going to get done on a short budget.

You need a helper if this is going to be the first time "Pulling the Head"
So now, ... you are starring in your own personal version of:
    Mission Impossible.

Your first Mission isn't that difficult.

Get on the phone and make some calls to Regional Technical High Schools.
Speak with that member of the Faculty who Instructs Automotive Tech-2.

Tell him YOU need a Tutor to help YOU replace the Cylinder Head Gasket on an Early Model Yamaha Inline Four with Double Overhead Cams.
You'd like him to recommend one of his most talented students.
Leave your Name and Telephone Number at a couple of places.

With any luck you'll be getting a call from some Hot-Rod Kid like our Member Tyler ... and, ...

The rest, as they say is History!

    Get on it!

Head gasket. Easy fix, just get the book and take your time. Be sure to replace the valve seals while you have the head off and are checking it for warp (not a requirement but easy to do at this point for piece of mind).

I couldn't agree more on the valve seals... I had my head apart just a few months ago. Now I've got to do it again...

Re: Oil leak...what gasket is this? (NEW picture!!)

When you have to remove the Cylinder Head on an "Older Model Bike" ... you have to make some decisions about how much to have done.

Since the Head must come off to do the Leaking Gasket ... there are some additional chores you can perform to insure that the Head won't have to be "Pulled" again.

Doing Valve Seals is always a wise choice.

But to do the Valve Seals requires each of the Valves to be removed while the Valve Seal at the top of the Valve Guide is removed and replaced with the New Seal.

With the VALVE removed you can Dress the Valves with a High Speed Wire Brush and remove all traces of Carbon Deposits from the lower part of the Valve Stem and on the slope of the Valves Face.

With proper tools ... a good deal of Carbon Deposit can be removed from the Bottom of the Valve and from the Interior of the Head Casting above the Valve Seat.

With the Valve loose ... the Valve and Seat can be "Lapped" for renewing the Gas Tight Seal between the Valve and its Seat.
The process is easily done and the materials needed are inexpensive.

Additional work can be done to POLISH the Cylinder Heads Combustion Chamber and the Crown on the Pistons which will allow the Head and Piston to resist the formation of Carbon Deposits and reduce the likelihood of having to Pull the Head to Decarbon surfaces for a long time into the future.
