loud clunk or clank while shifting??????

    my bike shifts fine, but it is loud while shifting. while sitting at red light and putting bike in 1st gear the bike slightly jumps forward and it is loud shifting from gear to gear. any suggestions?

    I would try adjusting the clutch. Sounds like its not releasing completely.

    Steve, it helps to know what kind of bike you have... Some XJ's just naturally clunk when you shift.. Like the XJ1100. If the bike lurches forward quite a bit when you shift into first, it's possible that the clutch cable needs some adjustment. There's an adjustment screw on the clutch perch. Try turning it out one revolution at a time, and see if it improves. Don't go too far out, as the clutch may start slipping, and don't forget to set the lock nut.

    Also, what kind of oil are you using in the bike? Heavier oils make the clutch drag a bit, especially when it's cold.

    sorry for not posting what bike i have....its an 86 xj700. my clutches slip slightly upon strong acceleration and i plan on replacing soon. i was just curious about the loud shifting and the lunge forward.....thanks!!!

    I had a similar problem. My '82 650 Maxim would also want to lurch when I revved the engine while at a stop light with the clutch pulled in. I changed my friction plates and it no longer lurches. It still clunks just a bit when I put it into first.
