Every one assumes its not available OEM since its so old. E-bay is just one source that is easy for most to access. Yamaha website gives you part numbers but not always available.

    Wow!

I've been hording an extra right sidecover for my 550 Seca. Being out of work right now it's making it harder to fight the temptation to list the cover and an extra tank on ebay. If I do ever come to that point I'll have to give XJ'ers a shot at them first.

MN-- I know they're actually available, much as I hate to admit it I BOUGHT ONE earlier this summer right from Yamaha, for my '83. Then I applied my NOS "Seca 550" badge to it, and have to wait until someone (LEN???) comes out with a stripe package.

Hey Big I know you know but I was just saying most people would not even check OEM.

I was actually quite surprised how much stuff Yamaha still offers, especailly "consummables" like gaskets, etc. MOST of the big things aren't available anymore, but then again you would be surprised. You can still get the "YICS" covers (ignition cover, crankcase end cover) some tank badges, fenders, it varies widely from bike to bike. I needed a 550 clutch basket, Yamaha still has them...for $165! I got one off eBay for $22... The only drawback is Yamaha's PRICES. If you don't mind paying, but then again WE have Chacal...

I think I should learn how to make molds of my side covers. They may come in handy someday.

I found a right side cover for an '82 in my local motorcycle bone-yard - Sport Wheels.

Cost me $40 and it took me about 3 hours of digging through about 2 dozen bins of sidepanels and other plastics. Not perfect condition, but it should be more than serviceable after being repainted to match my bike.

Oh, just in case anyone's interested, they did have the matching left side panel and several left side panels for the same era Seca 650's as well.

I'm one of the many with my eyes open for one.
I think if someone were to make a mold and start churning out fiber glass replacements of reasonable quality - it would probably be worth their time with demand what it is. Sell them for $40, and you'd still be more than half what it seems to take to pick one up with out junk yard diving.
