My friend Mike met you there with Dick, they said it was a great time. I hate that I missed it. There is another ride in Pitsboro this Sunday to benifit the Americian Cancer Society. I am planning to go, any interest from anybody?

Yea we ran into Mike when we were looking at bikes during the mid point break then Dick walked up too. Enjoyed meeting him and seeing Dick again. Was funny, when we told Mike what we rode he mention the forum then his friend Mark - I told him everyone must know Mark. :)

I don't think I can make Sunday - what time does the ride start? Would have to be 1 or 2 for me to make it.

By the way we replaced the seals and bearing on RTs alternator but he still has a leak. He is going to pull the cover again and look but is tied up for a bit. Could be the oil is coming from someplace else like the trans cover gasket. Have to dig into it more.

If there was alot of oil in the housing there may still be oil in the alternator windings and dripping out. Maybe cleaning it with a good solvent will get rid of it. I thing the ride starts about 1pm i'll have to find the flyer and see.

    Hey guys,

I told Bill this story..gotta share it with the rest. My boss was looking for a XJ bike. He wants to get back into riding. He has the darndest nose for finding a good deal but this takes the cake. He found a Maxim XJ-650 on craigslist at Ironhorse for $800.00. The owner had it in for repairs, couldn't pay the bill, signed over the title, and they were selling it for the repair cost. But, when they were delivering it to him it blew a valve and he refused it.

So he went back to Craigslist and found a 1986 Maxim-X almost exactly like mine (sans the back-rest/sissy-bar). Here's the kicker. The guy had another bike and hadn't ridden the Maxim-X in a year so it has set around. He just wanted it out of his garage and gave it to my boss free!!!

Argh!!! If nothing else I could have used it for a parts bike...now we are going to be accused of being twins!!

    Bill and Mlew,

Pulled the generator cover (again) and found a small pool of oil inside, so the leak is still coming from somewhere around the motor generator. But, I am betting I now know where. Bill, recall the "nozzle" we discovered under the bearing mount wings, the one that apparently "splashes" oil onto the chain? Remember it also had an o-ring seal.

I took some q-tips and started dabbing around on the back wall of the generator case to see if I could find any areas that were damp with oil. The nozzle is only partially covered by a bearing-mount wing so I could see it. When I dapped around and on it I got oil. Directly under the rotor there was a pool of oil but none on the back wall directly between the rotor and the pool of oil.

Before I pull anything more I'm going to order the nozzle o-ring from chacal.

    Hey guys,

I confirmed the oil leak was coming from around the oil nozzle/diverter. I ran the bike tonight until it was good and hot, returned home, and pulled the generator cover. I could see the oil welling past the nozzle's o-ring. So, if I can find the time tomorrow morning I am going to try and pull the rotor and rotor bearing housing so I can replace the o-ring.

With the great weather, isn't it about time we went for a ride again?

    Me too,

Hey all, when are we going to get together for a ride? The tank museum in Danville Va is calling to me!

Oh, saw B1blommer's free Maxim-X..not bad...took it for a test run for him. He really really needs new tires before he does any serious riding. The tire pressure on them was way way low, almost dangerously low. Any hard cornering and they might have rolled off the rims.

    Hey guys,

Results of the test ride are promising...took it for a ride and got it good and hot. No apparent leaks from the generator area. I'm not ready to declare victory immediately but signs are good.

Now I just need to let it cool and spend an hour or so cleaning off all the gunky oil that's accumulated and migrated everywhere. Does anyone have any suggestions for an all purpose cleaner that's safe (and effective) for all surfaces?

    Hey guys,
New to the Site, and Bill told me to check out this Forum. Looks like I'm not the only one on an xj around here. I've had it for about 2 years, and have had it running and ridable for about 6 or 8 months. I have trouble starting it on chilly mornings, but I don't think it is the enrichment circut. Gonna clean the Carbs again tonight, get my timing deal that I posted about in another forum worked out, and if it still isn't starting right, I may try to borrow that Colortune from you, Bill. If you don't want a stranger borrowing an $80 glass tool, I don't blame you.

    Thanks,
    Thomas from Wendell, NC

You might just have another XJ owner in your area soon. I have been sent to Mocksville for work and may have to move there if things don't pick up in Michigan soon. In the month or so I have worked there all I see are Harleys and gold wings. Looks like great riding country to me. Too bad my bike is up in Michigan while I'm down in NC.

I wont have the bike in NC until I decide to move there.
I'll be spending the rest of October in NC bikeless.
I have been in Michigan for the past week riding every day but man it's getting cold up there. The roads SUCK due to potholes and lack of upkeep.

    Welcome maz43 and Turkey,

I'm a NC native..never seriously considered living anywhere else. The mountains and the sea are close by and you can realistically ride year round with a little bundling up.

Listen to Bill and mlew when they give you advice on bike repairs and improvements. They tend to be on the modest side but they really know their stuff.

    Hey Raleigh Riders,

I'm looking (on very short notice) for some riders interested in taking an Advanced Rider Course given by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation at Wake Tech this coming Saturday 11/1 from 8-5. Cost is $65.00. The minimum sign-up to take the class is six students. Right now we have 4 confirmed with a couple more on the hook unconfirmed. The information is at the link below (page 76 of the document) or you can call Wake Tech at 919-866-5853, or email at twhitaker@waketech.edu for information.

The class is rain or shine.

I've been thinking about taking the advanced class but can't do it this weekend. I took the basic class at Johnston CC back in April before I got my bike ( refresher since I had not riden since I was a kid) and extremely enjoyed it.

If you guys go; Good luck and have fun.

Not yet I may get you to weld them!

I think the bolt is too long - bottoms out before you get it tightened correctly. Gonna get more bolts this evening I hope.

Cool good luck on your trip. Sounds like fun. Was only kidding about welding them. The shorter bolt let me tighten them better and they appear to be fine. Have not had a chance to ride with them yet.

    Hey Raleigh Riders,

Who's going to be around the area for Thanksgiving? If the weather is nice I hope to either do some riding this coming weekend or the weekend immediately after Thanksgiving. I hope to take the whole week off (need to burn some vacation or lose it) but frankly I have a nasty worry work is going to interrupt it.

    Days I'd be available:

    Friday: Most Probable
    Saturday: Probable
    Sunday Afternoon: Probable

Glad you made it back safely. I would be a zombie after 14 hours in the air. I need to fire the Maxim-X up. I've been so busy with work and family I've not had a chance to even go out on a jaunt.

    Well,

As for my 2 cents, Friday is probably a better day than Sunday afternoon from a work (and weather) perspective. I am on call through the holidays and currently I think I am most likely to get called Saturday or Sunday (which has changed from my last post). If most can do Friday I vote for that...but given the uncertainty in my call out I think I should really be counted as only 1/2 a vote.

Locked and Loaded is a good spot...I've been before and can vouch for it. Is this just a lunch meeting or do we want to consider an afternoon ride after lunch?

Locked and Loaded sounds good. I am up for either a ride after or lunch.

I'll through a time of 12:00 out for starters but anytime around noon is fine.

Yea, sort of a false alarm. The couple that I had watching her are a little; how do I put this; wussieish. She did have a small splinter which was kinda deep and hard to get to but no problem.

Had a great time meeting you guys. Sorry I missed the ride; sounds like it was fun.

Just wanted to post and subscribe to this thread. I've been riding the XS1100 for a couple of years and just bought a XJ650 last month. I love this thing it handles like a dream. Anyway. I live down by the beach near New Bern. If any of you are riding down this way shoot me a PM and we can meet up. If I'm cruising up your way I'll do the same.

Long time no see everyone...the holidays kept me busy with family and chores. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year (albeit belated). I have some info about a Charity Ride in June that some of you might be interested in. Will post soon.

Also, I am expecting the schedule for the Experienced Rider Course at Wake Tech to be available at the end of January. I will also post this information.

    Dave,

Welcome to the thread...so Havelock? I've been through it many times on my way to/from Arapahoe, NC when I went to YMCA camp (Camp Seagull/Seafarer) with my daughters. It's been about three years though. Cherry Point marine base is nearby--right?
