My right side cover disapeared from my 1983 650 Maxim so I am trying to locate another one. I hope a member will be able to direct me to one. Please do not send me to E-bay.

Unfortunately, eBay is probably your best bet. You could try this place http://motolane.com/ or register with an on-line parts locator service (which is how I found Motolane) but they do come up on eBay quite often. I just plugged the part numbers in (for both red and blue) for a couple NOS suppliers and came up empty-handed.

I finally found one for mine on E-bay. From the looks of it the right side cover loss seems to be quite common, don't know why. Took me almost three months to get one but finally got a very nice one. Chacal tried to help but did not have one for a Maxim. As it would appear that this loss is common (because there are a LOT of left covers available but not so many right ones) I have epoxied a short piece of light cable to mine and fastened it to the frame on the other end. I also plan on doing the same thing to my latest Maxim before I am done with it.
Given the fact that there are so many of them missing one would think that the ditches along the hiways should be full of them, however I can tell you from experience that once they hit the road they don't look quite the same.

Thanks for the help. We'll keep looking. I had the same idea of securing the cover to the frame with a tie-wrap.

Right side covers get lost more than left ones because you take the right one off to get to the battery. Then they either get left off and lost/forgotten, or the grommet wears out so it falls off easier than the left.

Take a block of Styrofoam, carve it into the basic cover dimensions. Use the left side for making a flat cardboard template.

Then do the final shaping & fine fitting with sandpaper allowing some overlap for the chrome trim piece (if wanted). Lay up several sheets of fiberglass crosshatched over the foam pattern. Give it a final gel-coat.

Let it dry, trim, sand and paint. Remember to provide an ear extension for the protruding studs (or holes). One can use a bolt through the left and right edges to secure your new cover.

Cost $30-$40 at worst. Supplies avail. at most auto supply outlets.
I know - one doesn't want to spend the time etc. However; you'll have great bragging rights and you can use your skills to make replicas for sale ...

Use a piece of pull chain from a lamp, conected to the cover and the other end to the bike. So if the cover comes off while riding it wont be lost.

Made mine from the left side cover and card board and fiberglassed like you said . now to place the PEGS for the grommets on the frame. fine tune it and may even go to a local fiberglass place to get a few made.
